Comparison of My Strengths With Transformational Leadership

According to Whitehead, Dittman, & McNulty (2017), leadership is a tool use to help a system function, it is not a position nor a title (p.28). In order for this complex healthcare system to function appropriately, a leader must know it strengths and how to apply them in order to be effective. As an achiever, I set goal and work toward achieving them, this strength is in alignment with the transformational leader who is charismatic, have a positive behavior in order to inspire people to achieve the same goal.

But in this complex healthcare system, I must know that I am not in control of other but myself (Whitehead, Dittman, & McNulty, 2017, p.21). I must recognize that a small change can affect the outcome if people decide to behave differently from what is expected from them. (Whitehead, Dittman, & McNulty, 2017, p.20). In order to achieve a change, I must be able to implement small simple rules, identify people that can motivate others in other to achieve our common goal.

A transformational leader is also a motivator, this characteristic is in alignment with my strength as developer. As developer I see potential in any individual that is in my presence and I devote myself to help them achieve their goals. This can be difficult to accomplish in a complex healthcare system because in a chaotic situation, trying to create order or stability can create disaster or missed opportunities and as a leader, I should ask myself if I can refrain from imposing a change to fix a problem when needed.

Similar to the relator that like to spend time with friends I developed connection with and care about their feelings, their goals, fears and dreams (Rath, 2007), a transformational leader takes the time to individually know and form bonds with others. (Whitehead, Dittman, & McNulty, 2017) in a simple system.

In a complex system, a transformational leadership must know that 'people in relationship with others will change the structure' and 'ask how to create a relationship-rich' (Whitehead, Dittman, & McNulty, 2017, p.22). To be an effective transformational leader, a leader must listen to the follower's complaints and requests in order to learn how to positively impact change in the organization. As a learner, I am eager to learn new facts, skills or knowledge (Rath 2017, p.136). In a complex situation the transformational leader must know that 'all organizations are complex adaptive systems and can I demonstrate patient when a situation is disorganized' (Whitehead, Dittman, & McNulty, 2017, p.22), to learn how to reach a goal. As futuristic, I take time to think about the future. (Rath 2007, p.107), similar to this definition, a transformational leader is described as visionary, someone who is inspirational motivator and has a high expectation for others. (Whitehead, Dittman, & McNulty, 2017, p.11), but in a complex situation, this type of leader must be willing to change and grow along with those they lead. They must deemphasize hierarchy with a free flow of information and communication. (Whitehead, Dittman, & McNulty, 2017, p.23).

Evolution of personal leadership style as an Advanced Practice Nurse

When I look back and remember how intimidated I was at my first nursing job and where I am today, I can notice a change in my leadership style. Right after graduation, my first job was PM supervisor in an assisted living facility. I was in charge of twelve nursing assistants and almost hundred and fifty residents. This was intimidating but I was eager to learn how to manage people. My leadership style was transactional where people are recompensated when they performed well and punished when they are not (Whitehead, Dittman, & McNulty, 2017) with my evening staff.

For example, the night shift was constantly complaining about the evening shift because residents were very wet at the first round into their shift and they will have to change all the bedding and wake residents up. I started reprimanding staff members that were not completing their task and giving bonus and other incentive to those that finish their assignment. I was always very tired at the end of my shift at that time and while I recognized that it was not the appropriate leadership style I have grown and changed a lot and my leadership style has also evolve. In my new leadership role as the leader of the infection control team, I am more inclusive, I ask and take into consideration my coworker's opinions. I listen to everybody's idea and learn from them. My education over the years has help me throughout my journey and will continue to help me be a better leader than today.

Conclusion

It is difficult to determine the type of leadership that will be more beneficial in the healthcare system. Throughout my education, I have learned a lot about transformational leadership and believe it will be more suited for this ever-changing system. According to According to Smith, P. O. (2015). 'The cornerstones of the transformational approach, based on the aforementioned dimensions, include a focus on making tomorrow better, having an inspirational noble vision, being authentic to the mission while demonstrating integrity, having and promoting a growth mind set for personal and professional development while recognizing effort and performance, and inspiring originality to push toward a culture of innovation'. Transformational style also promotes teamwork which is necessary to provide quality care to patients.
