Comparison of Gallants and Araby

Categories: Short Story

Gallants and Araby are two stories from Dubliners written by James Joyce that depict the ideas of epiphanies, which are also known as “ah-ha moments.” While both stories are very different, the epiphanies can be compared as the realization of a life’s disappointments.

In the short story Two Gallents, Corley is going on a date with a housekeeper. Corley had gone on a date with the woman where at the end of the date she gives Corey a gold coin she had stolen.

While leaving his friend Lenehan to ponder in the loneliness of his thoughts. The epiphany is of the coin being the forth showing of a hidden reality.

In the case of the narrator in Araby, the narrator is completely in love with a girl he has never talked to. He constantly day dreams about her, follows her to school every morning. The girl finally talks to him with wish to go to the araby, but isn’t allowed by her parents.

He says not to worry because he will get her something from there. He has the trip all planned out, when everything goes wrong. His uncle also forgets about going to araby and comes home drunk instead, which made him very late to the market. When he finally arrives, he is rushed with a cashier, and leaves empty handed. Standing alone is when he has the epiphany that buying the girl presents would not make her love him.

It was a beautiful morning, birds were chirping, I was still tired from being up with contractions all night, and I was surrounded by people I love. The nurse came in and checked me I was still only two centimeters dilated, they proceeded to give me the ptosis and asked me to get up and walk a few laps. I walked the laps, smiling, and cheerful that it was finally the day, with a little fear in my mind that something could go wrong. I was excited like a new excitement I had never felt before. Once getting back to the room, they hooked me back up to all the machines the nurse came in to check me again, still I was at two centimeters. The nurse then called the doctor who said, “We are going to break your water.” After a few attempts at that she stopped, and we waited some more. After a few hours the doctor came back in and said they are going to start my epidural to see if that would further the process. The anesthesiologist came in gave my epidural and I thought it was time to push, I was so wrong. I felt a sharp pain at my lower stomach and cringed the bed as I yelled for help. The nurse came in immediately called for the doctor, this is when I knew something was wrong, I knew the baby that had been growing and moving in me for ten months was not okay. The baby, my daughter was no longer moving and in distress. The doctor came in and my heart was just broken, they checked for movement and they finally got a heartbeat as they rushed me to surgery. It is then they discovered as I was lying there on the table her head was stuck in the birth canal. It felt like a lifetime of them pushing and pulling to get her out. After a little while my blood pressure started to drop and I blacked out for a few moments, but when I woke up, they had pulled her out I heard her first cry. I felt a blanket of relief come over me and a silent thought in my head that this child was going to make it that this child was my second chance to redeem all of my bad choices in life.

When I was eighteen my grandmother moved into my parents’ house. She was my very best friend, we would cook together, go swim in the pool together, and she taught me how to fill her medicine container. On this one day granny was having a good day, so we decided to take a drive to the coast, we went shopping at the Dirt Cheap, our favorite place to go. We took a trip to the casino had crab legs for lunch with lots of cakes for dessert. Then on our way home she asked if we could get an ice cream. It was my definition of the perfect day. The following day, she was very tired and did not eat very much, maybe a piece of toast for lunch. She decided she was ready for bed, so she took all her medicine. While she was sleeping, I was watching television in the living room and I kept hearing this odd noise that sounded like a dying cat. After about the third time of hearing it I got up to investigate. Upon arriving in my grandmother’s room, I found her laying there moaning and foaming at the mouth. I knew from my knowledge with taking care of her she was having a diabetic attack. I quickly called 911 and put the diabetic pill under her tongue. I held her hand and kept her on her side until the ambulance arrived. It was in that moment a vision of me at the end of my journey becoming a nurse.

Cap and gown, pretty smiles, and shiny white shoes walked across the stage, with a wave and smile saying, “hey mom.” After having Olivia, I took a huge break from school. I took a certified nursing assistant course got my certification, and that was it. I started working in the nursing home. I enjoyed the company with the residents listening to their stories of how they grew old, their memories. It was also very hard work. I soon switched jobs and went to the VA, where I worked with the Alzheimer’s patients. This job was also very rewarding, knowing I am taking care of the men who made our country the place it is today. This job was also very wearing on my body, the patients when they had their moments would attack as if they were back in the war. One day while talking to one of the nurses she asked what I wanted to do with my life. I knew the women in my life mom, aunt, cousins all work in the medical field so I have had that in my mind to what I might want to be a nurse. She told me how good I was with the patients, how she started as a certified nursing assistant also, and how much the difference in money was. I have been a single mother for five years now so money is always on my mind, how I could work less and make more. She told me she was making three times as much money as I was while doing most of the things I have learned through work. That is the very moment I understood I could no longer wait I needed to finish school to be the best mother I could to my daughter.
