To build an efficient team in a healthcare organization, the traditional hierarchical system in the healthcare organizations seem to be detrimental.

  The team should be more inter-dependent and should have professionals in various disciplines at each level.

A team is a group of individuals that have different functions in the healthcare organization so that its goal can be achieved.  In general, any activity in the organization is considered teamwork.  However, certain characteristics such as common purposes of actions, an elaborate understanding of each one’s functions, considering a pool of skill and knowledge as a resource to the organization, having a common accountability towards the actions of the organization, and ability to handle the organization, need to be considered.

  Each and every individual in the team needs to be committed in performing his work without much control from outside.

Teamwork is not merely a contract between its members to cooperate during work.  Each and every member in the team should make a conscious effort that their actions are in coordination with the rest of the team, so that the organization is able to achieve its objectives and bring about a positive impact on the health status of its clients.

  Often training sessions, workshops and programs would be able to bring about team building and proper team functioning at all levels in the multi-disciplinary structure of a healthcare organization.  However, the basic principle for teamwork at each and every level is ‘commitment’.  During decision-making in the organization, the health professionals, support staff and the administration are not jointly involved.  Hence, at the operation level, a lot of inconveniences are felt as the staff members lack the commitment required for effective teamwork.  In every healthcare organization, a coordinated meeting should be held before taking important decisions so that each and every staff member is made to understand their role in the organization and the functions they would perform.  Such an effort would result in the staff member understanding his personal strengths and weaknesses.  He/she would then make efforts to exploit his/her strengths for the benefit of the organization, and upgrade the level of skill and knowledge so that any deficiencies are met.

One major constraint in team building is a severe shortage of commitment by the healthcare professionals in an organization.  Each staff member receives a different kind of training method.  They approach their job in different ways.  Besides, the ability to understand and recognize one and others role in the team is lacking.  They also do not seem to understand the other team member’s problems and may also have very high expectations from the others.  Hence, closer links need to be formed between each team members so that they are able to understand one another role better.  The team leader should be committed towards bringing about positive interactions between the team members.  Both formal and informal interactions should be encouraged.  He/she should also ensure that the education process continues in the organization so that the healthcare team learns from previous mistakes and becomes more competent in performing its tasks in the future.

It is essential that strong bonds exist in the team so that the performance is high and problems are well-understood and handled in an appropriate manner.  Each and every member of the team should be motivated in ensuring that the team and the organization achieve its goals.  Teams should not be allowed to work in isolation.  The team leader and the administration of the organization should ensure that the team members take part in planning and decision-making so that they do not lack motivation and commitment.  The administrators should make an effort that the each and every team member is able to achieve his personal objectives (so that they are motivated) and the objectives of the organization.  It is essential that a proper balance exists in this regard.  It is also essential that each and every team based in the organization develops links with other teams.  The team would be able to train and develop at each and every level, as they would learn from the experiences of other teams.  Each and every team member should work towards solving the various problems that arise during execution of teamwork. Personal differences need to be understood and sorted out in the best possible manner.  Efforts should also be on to prevent duplication of efforts in the team, as it would result in unnecessary wastage of the resources in the organization.
