Chris Gardner

1. Make a summary or give the gist of the story

Chris Gardner is a bright and talented but marginally employed salesman. Struggling to make ends meet, Gardner finds himself and his five-year-old son evicted from their San Francisco apartment with nowhere to go. When Gardner lands an internship at a prestigious stock brokerage firm, he and his son endure many hardships, including living in shelters, in pursuit of his dream of a better life for the two of them.

Chris Gardner is a family man struggling to make ends meet. Despite his valiant attempts to help keep the family afloat, the mother of his five-year-old son Christopher is buckling under the constant strain of financial pressure. No longer able to cope, she reluctantly decides to leave.

Chris, now a single father, continues doggedly to pursue a better-paying job using every sales skill he knows. He lands an internship at a prestigious stock brokerage firm, and although there is no salary, he accepts, hopeful he will end the program with a job and a promising future. Without a financial cushion, Chris and his son are soon evicted from their apartment and forced to sleep in shelters, bus stations, bathrooms, or wherever they can find refuge for the night.

Despite his troubles, Chris continues to honor his commitment as a loving and caring father, using the affection and trust his son has placed in him as an impetus to overcome the obstacles he faces.

2. What particle episode or scene in the story do you like most or struck you?

The scene that had really struck me most was when the CEO of the company told Chris Gardner that he was already accepted for the job. This scene is so inspirational to me. It was such a powerful scene of hard work and ambition paying off. As a student, sometimes it gets tough and you lose heart. If you don’t have patience, perseverance, hardwork and determination, you’ll get lost on the track and ruin your life. But this scene is a testimony that working you tail off will have its rewards. Some people have it handed to them. Others work for it.

3. Who among the characters in the story you can identify yourself>

Why? Somehow, I can identify myself with Chris Gardner. Same with Chris Gardner, there are many struggles that come into my life. People that may pull me down, schoolworks that cause stress and a lot more. But despite all of these, I still don’t lose hope. Aside from my family that gives me strength to move on in life, I have my God that gives me courage and wisdom to carry on in life. 4. Identify valuesor moral lessons learned from the story in relation to search for happiness. * Hardwork and determination always paysoff

* Humor is always important and no matter what panic doesn’t help * “Don’t ever let somebody tell you you can’t do something. If you got a dream, you gotta protect it. People can’t do something themselves, they will tell you, you can’t do it.” * Opportunity knocks your door maybe once or twice, that’s all and you should be in a position to identify it and grab it. 5. Give your own definition of happiness.

Happiness is a choice. It’s something that you have to want to receive. If a person always looks at all the negative then that person will never be happy. But if a person looks at the positive, then the person will feel happy. Happiness is joy without any holes. A warm feeling that makes you can’t help but smile. And for me, happiness is when, within that moment, you couldn’t ask for anything more. You couldn’t think of a single thing that would make it more perfect. Regardless of what else is going on in your life or in the world, there’s nothing you would change about what’s happening right then. But most of all, happiness is living a life of contentment together with me family and loved ones. And when you’re happy with yourself, the people and things around you, the way your life is and are just generally at peace.

6. What specific event or particular scene in the film that mirror the life of St. Candida. Chris Gardner is a single dad who went from living on the streets to owning his own brokerage firm . He had a lot of sacrifices just to give his family a comfortable life. He didn’t care of what might happen to his self. He got bumped by a car, got insulted, he was imprisoned because of not paying the parking ticket and got out of their house because he had no money to pay for the rent. But despite all these, he didn’t give up.

He had not lose hoipe. He did everything, worked hard, had perseverance and patience and strived hard. In the end, he was able to reach the top and was successful in his career more than he had ever knew. Just like Chris Gardner, St. Candida didn’t have a comfortable life. She also did things that may have benefit other people. She had built institutions that had provided better living to other people most especially to the poor and the marginalized. Despite all the struugles that had come her way, she also did not give up. She didn’t lose hoipe and trusted everything to God.
