Chetan Bhagat’s novel book “The Three Mistakes of my Life” is a story that talks about business, cricket, and religion. The title has nothing to do with the mistakes of the author but it was the mistakes that have done by Govind Patel, who has two friends named Ishaan and Omi. Govind Patel is a young man who dreams to become a successful businessman someday and to have his own business. Ishaan was the best cricketer in his locality and school.
Omi is the son of the Hindu priest who does not have many dreams but he likes to have a healthy body. The novel did not focused on one character but it follows the story of three young men struggling to fulfill their goals and passions in the backdrop of earth quake, politics and communal violence.
The character analysis of Govind Patel reveals that there’s a Classical Literary Theory or Classicism integrates in the novel. Govind is a simple guy that can anybody relate.
He wants to be a successful businessman for them to escape poverty. As he says, “It is just that both of them not doing well at studies, especially Math, and I am good at it”, there’s an intellectual ability of the character shown. It is also said that he is the “poorest of the three” but he still had a determination that he will be “the richest one day” (12). Then, they decided to open a business, the “Team India Cricket Shop”, hoping that they will become successful but the first mistake was happened after this idea.
Govind’s mistake was he had paid a huge amount for the early expansion of their business but the mall later got destroyed due to 2001 Gujarat earthquake.
Ishaan was an “army but he could not stand some major ordering him around for the next two decades of his life so he paid the penalty, cited personal reasons like ailing parents or something and ran right back to Belrampur” (14). He was a very talented cricket player so he joins the business of them three to teach other kids on how to play cricket and one of that kids is Ali, a Muslim who is a great batsman. He has a younger sister named Vidya who will get a Medicine entrance exam but she is not good in Math so he ask Govind to teach his sister with a salary. The second mistake was happened after Govind accepted the offer of being a tutor because he fell in love with his friend’s sister and it is against the protocol of their friendship.
Omi’s family has a great respect among the people in their temple. Through the help of his parents and uncle, they get a place where they can start their business. His family wants him to become a priest but he didn’t want to be a priest. They believed that “the most brutal terrorists are Muslim” (31). It is reported in the news that “miscreants set fire to a bogie of the Sabarmati Express” where the father and mother of Omi aboard. Their first suspect is the Muslims that caused them to make a war. The third mistake was happened when the Hindus make a war to Muslims because he wasn’t able to save Ali. Ali’s wrist was destroyed and it can affect his playing as a batsman in cricket.
The text recounts the life of the 3 young men (Govind, Ishaan, Omi) who had different interest in life. Govind’s interest is a business, Ishaan’s interest is the cricket, and Omi’s family interest is religion. It is shown that man is the center of the story. They have different interest but through the intellectual ability of Govind they come up with one idea. Thus, this novel tells the reader to avoid taking hasty decisions without thinking about the future, family and surrounding world because at some point in our life we do think and act selfish like Govind.
