CHAPTER THREEREASERCH METHODOLOGY3.1. INTRODUCTIONThis section presents the methodology used to address the research questions. It includes description of the study area, definition of operational variables, and details of the research method , research design, source of data, sampling technique, method of data analysis, research approach, and the choice and administration of the questionnaires will also describes.3.2. Description of the study area When we come to the research area this study will be conduct in Guraferda woreda , Bench Maji zone administration (BMZA). BMZ is one of the 14 administrative zones with in Southern Nation Nationalities and peoples’ Regional Government (SNNPRG).

BMZ is located at south west of Ethiopia, which is 584 km far from Addis Ababa and 836 km from the regional capital Hawassa. The zone currently composed of 10 rural woredas and 1 city administration and with a total area of about 19,252.00 square kilometer. According to the 2007 national population and census, the total population of the Bench-Maji zone is estimated to be 752,537 out of which 373,348 are men and 379,183 are women (source: BMZFED, 2016 report).

Mizan Aman is the administrative center of the zone situated at a distance of 584 km south west to Addis Ababa. The study will conduct in selected kebeles of Guraferda woreda in bench maji zone Snnpr. Guraferda woreda has a total area of 46215.04 square kilometers .The woreda capital, Biftu town, is located at the distance of 624 kilometer south west of Addis Ababa. Guraferda woreda is bounded from the north by south bench woreda and bebeka coffee state share company, south by Gambella region and Sheka zone, east by sheko woreda ,and west by surma woreda. According to the 2007 censes, the woreda has the population 35271.The woreda has 25 kebeles and 22 public service organizations. Among those public service organizations the researcher will randomly select 3.3 Operational definition of variablesIn this research there will be two independent variables and one dependent variable3.3.1. Independent variableFor the purpose of this research two independent variables will identify to influence the dependent variable. The independent variables include employee’s turnover and the role of leadership in addressing employee’s turnover. Definition of independent variables.Employee turnover:-employees quite form there organization and the presence of high employee turnover affect the organizational performance.Leadership role:-these roles are responsibilities that the leader should do whatever he can to keep away employees from high employees turnover such as motivating employees, creating conducive working environment, developing sense of belongingness, developing trust and the like.3.3.2. Dependent variablesThe dependent variables of this study is organizational performance; efficiency of organizational performance in this study can be expresses through service delivery from woreda to kebele3.4. Research DesignThe study will adapt descriptive research design to identify factors affecting employee turnover that affect the performance of public service organizations. The rationale behind choosing this designs to describe the existing situation with regard to the respondents view about employees turnover .So the researcher will assess what are the main causes, the role of leadership in reducing the turnover, and the impact of employee turnover on the public service efficiencies in six offices and how the sectors motivate and encourage their employees to minimize the turn over at woreda level.3.5. Research ApproachesThere are three research method approaches; the quantitative, qualitative and the mixed method approach to collect and analyse data. In this study both open and closed ended questions, both qualitative and quantitative data analysis will be uses. Therefore, the research method in this study will be the mixed method approach involving both quantitative and qualitative data. The mixed method approach is one in which the researcher tends to base knowledge claims, on pragmatic grounds (e.g., consequence oriented, problem-centred, and pluralistic). This will do with a view to create a better understanding of the research problem. Qualitative method will enabling us to study of the selected issue in depth and to asses behaviour, attitudes, and opinion of the respondents. In other words, the quantitative method helps the researcher to study the selected issue in breadth. Therefore, studying the issue in depth and breadth will provide a quality result.3.5.1. Target PopulationThe target populations for this study will be covered those employees currently working in guraferda woreda government organizations. These bodies includes heads and professionals of guraferda woreda agriculture and natural resource, Animal and fishery, Education ,Health, Public service and Tax administration offices, HR process owners, and the others are ex- employees those who had been working in guraferda woreda but now quit due to different reasons and live in other places. 3.5.2. Sampling framethe sample frame of this study will include Leaders of agriculture, Health, Animal and Fishery, Education, public service, and tax administration offices respectively, kebele managers of guraferda woreda those who undertake community development activities, ex-employees at different level, woreda civil servants, and human resource process owners.3.5.3. Sample unitThe sample unit of the study will be six woreda leaders from concerened office,Two leaders for each kebele leads from 15 kebeles farmers who undertake community development activities,145 woreda civil servants,100 ex-employees at different level, and six human resource process owners will be the sampling unit of this reaserch.Sample Size and DeterminationIn order to gain accurate information about the target population determining sample size is a very important issue. Due to this to increase the validity of the study, accepted sample size and suitable sampling technique will be used in special care and attention. The total number of population ———– Thus, to determine the sample size for categorical data Cochran’s standard for According to Cochran’s standard formula, sample size is determined as follows no= Z2 P(1-P)e2Where-N= the desired sample sizeZ= the standard normal variable at required level of confidenceP= the estimated proportion of an attribute that is present in the populationM= the margin of errors (error researcher willing to except)Since the distribution of variability of the population attributes is not estimated it is recommended to use the maximum variability in the population which is 50 %. Thus P= 0.5, and 1-P= 0.5. The researcher considers 95% level of confidence, the corresponding standard normal deviate or standard value (table value) is Z=1.96 and the desired level of significance (margin of errors at 95% confidence) is e=0.05 therefore the sample size given by ;no = Z2 P(1-P)e2 Z=1.96 e= 0.05 P=0.5 no = (1.96)2 (0.5)(1-0.5)/(0.05)2 = 384However, since the total population of the study is, which is below 10,000, the sample size using 95% level of confidence will befn=n1+n/N,There for,N—– and n——-Table 3.1 Number of respondents which will be taken From Each Sample AreaNo Sampling frame Total population Sample population Sampling techniques Data collection instrument1 Members of woreda leader purposive Interview2 Woreda civil servants Simple random questionerrie3 Ex-employees Convenience method questionerrie4 Human resource process owners census FGD5 Kebele leaders purposive FGDTotal Source of DataFor the purpose of this study the researcher will use both primary and secondary data sources. The primary data will be collect through questionnaires filled by the former and existing employees of the organization. Interview will be conduct with the leadership, the core and support work process owners to be familiar with the overall environment of the organization and efforts and performance made to reduce employees’ turnover and understand the impacts of it over the achievement of organizational objectives. As far as secondary data is concerned, relevant data will be collect from the woreda administration office documents, woreda and zonal annual reports of different years, human resource management books and literatures, websites (internet) and other available sources will be use.Data Collection Techniques and InstrumentsData will be collect through different instruments such as, key informants; questionnaires; focus group discussion; semi structured questioner will be design, and distribute to the sample respondents.Data analysisAfter collecting the data it will be analyze by using both quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques. The qualitative analysis will be employ with the help of open axial and selecting coding of ideas; opinions; suggestions of the sample population. While the quantitative techniques uses with the help of descriptive statistics like frequency tables, and percentage method to present and show the impacts of employees turn over on organizational performance by using different variables.
