Censorship on the Internet Necessary

Categories: Internet Censorship

With the exponentially growing numbers of internet users, all of a vast age range, it is increasingly necessary for censorship on the world wide web. As a world community, we must keep the general public safe from images and information that can do irreparable harm to the mental and social balance so necessary for all human beings. From ISIS recruiting young members to the live streaming of a man killing an elderly victim, too much violence is available to anyone whether they are prepared or not prepared for what they see and hear.

Some may argue that censoring any information on the internet will go against an individual’s freedom of speech, but the old saying “ignorance is bliss” may actually be true. News which is broadcast for any one of any age on the world wide web must be censored to protect the innocent who have no use for the information, making the outcomes harmful to those who cannot protect themselves from the images and sounds of indiscriminate violence.

Starting with political censorship which is when leadership has control of the news, information, and other forms of communication, including art.

Political censorship date back as time could tell with the Greeks executing a philosopher for teaching his unconventional views to his students ('Censorship.'). With political censorship we can leave it the government which was made to protect us as a whole to keep information that could destroy the innocence of our society. Religious or educational censorship bans, or attempts to ban, access to materials deemed inappropriate by administrators or members of the community ('Censorship.'). Religious protects people against sins deemed as a sin against that religion like pornography, murder, theft, or anything that would alter what people think is moral and immoral. Self-censorship, in which people limit their own expressions, is a decision by an individual to withhold information for a particular reason ('Censorship.'). Libraries tend to use self-censorship to censor books that are considered controversial.

Library are used to give students access to information they may not find normally, but recently a large majority of school libraries have taken it upon themselves to censor controversial materials to avoid “hassle and publicity” (Dawkins). The hassle that school libraries are trying to avoid are when the school administration tries to “challenge” the library, which leads to the material in the library getting removed or restricted either way (Dawkins). Dawkins then states that little research has been done to prove that having controversial material in the library affect the way students acts. But, the decision to remove the material is all up to the higher ups of the school.

Now 9 out of 10 librarians refuse to purchase potentially helpful material to the students because of a potential for controversy. Many of these librarians believe in the right to read, but are afraid to buy material that will lead it getting censored or restricted and further wasting money they could of used on other material. The self-censorship of libraries all relate back to the Spiral of Silence Theory, proposed by Noelle-Neumann in 1974, which states that people tend to self-censor because of: fear of isolation, unwillingness to speak against perceived majority opinion, and the belief that public opinion tends to keep people in line.

With the exponentially growing amount of users online there are many dangers that can destroy the purity and innocence of young and old users. The internet was designed as a place for everyone to share and to have access to material that should be available to everybody, but people take advantage of that by uploading videos that can ruin a person well-being and scar someone for life. Throughout the year of 2015 a massive terrorist organization, ISIS, conducted several beheading of citizen from various countries. These videos were posted to different social media platforms on the internet and accumulated numerous views. After sending a shock wave throughout the world they started using social media platforms to recruit members. Many young people who did not feel like they were at home fled and joined ISIS. And, because moderators if the social media platforms could not manage chats they used to recruit young members.
