What Can You Say About CASS?

I confusedly asked, "Ate, as an alumna from CASS, what can you say about CASS?"

She stared at me disbelievingly, paused, thought for a while and replied, "A home."

Months ago, I was just a dust of star in the universe dreaming so hard to be a part of the new world called MSU-IIT. Literally, if you are an Iliganon, it is usual or almost automatic that you aspire to study in a prestigious school that is just near your home.

Since I am pure Iliganon, indeed I was one of those aspirants.

Upon entering IIT, it was also a dream of mine to be in a college department I will feel most welcomed in. Well, who wouldn't? My sister whom just graduated last year has always been my icon, and she was in College of Arts and Social Sciences.

CASS caught my interest, and right then on I made a goal. I must pass the SASE and obtain the accurate score to enter my dream course.

I can still imagine how I prayed every night just for it to happen. At those moments, it was the most important thing for me.

But hey, reality just dawns on us. Yes, I passed the SASE but my score did not reach the exact score for my dream course. It was sad, really sad. It was a feeling of something almost there but is actually nothing. However, I was happy that I was able to enter the best college department I can be on, the College of Arts and Social Sciences.

The first week of class pass by like a blur, although you can feel so much difference from your previous schools. The double ride, that means double fare, block mates who aren't from the same city (the "welcome to Iligan" again and again), the pedestrian lanes, the amazing, techie, air-conditioned library, the CASSalida theater that needs stamina (because 4-storey building is no joke), the CASS-EC Office where most of the girls in CASS waits for the ever famous Gov. Adin, the freedom of art expressed in clothing, and of course, the CASS realities the stories of the students whose current courses aren't their first choices. Just like mine.

Even when there was a lot of difference, I realized that all of them were just like me, the freshmen, the sophomores, the seniors, and even alumni. Each and every one of us shared a lot of shocked, amused, sad, funny, and strange feeling when we all first entered to the heart of the institution.

To be really honest, I was asking for my sister's opinion about CASS because as of now, CASS for me is still a place not a home.

Ironically, oddly and crazily, even when I dreamed so much of being here, I did not feel the "homey" feeling my sister felt. Of course I'm still not used to all of it, and I think it is okay for it has only been 5 weeks. And do not worry, I've been said that the charm of CASS is not to automatically feel at home at first, but is the fact that once you enter this college, you won't like leaving anymore.

All I am looking forward to is the day I can say CASS is MY home. As I go to school every day and walk around and observe CASS grounds and building, that I am reminded that this place will not be just a place, will not just be a school, but is and will forever be a home for me.

Now, I still am just a dust of star in the universe but more fortunate to be embraced by the new world to be explored, the heart and conscience of IIT, College of Arts and Social Sciences.
