Book Report on Catching Fire
Imagine having to kill and fight for both yours and your family’s lives, end up making it out alive just to do it a second time. That’s what happens in Catching Fire. It is the second book in the Hunger Games series. All three books are written by Suzanne Collins. The trilogy of books would mostly fall into the science fiction and fantasy subgenres of fiction. The story is told from the main character, Katniss Everdeen, prospective which is therefore told in the first person.
The story continues right after the first book once Katniss gets back from the 74th Hunger Games. After her victory tour, President Snow announces that she must participate in the 75th Hunger Games.
The beginning of the story takes place in District Twelve. As far as I know, It didn’t seem like there was an exact date. The closest thing to that would be that it is during the 75th Hunger Games. After the beginning, the main story takes place in Quarter Quell. Quarter Quell is the arena that the 75th games took place at. it is a beach in the shape of a clock. Every 25 years the games happen at Quarter Quell. While the arena in the first book didn’t have a name this one is more special as it is a tradition. The story and ending would be very different if it was in a different environment like a jungle for example.
The main character is Katniss Everdeen.
She is brought into the 75th hunger games along with Peeta. Katniss is tall and has medium length brown hair. She reminds me of my mother as she would do anything for her family. In the story, it is played out to the public that Katniss and Peeta are lovers. Peeta Mellark is buff and has blonde hair. Throughout the books, he is Katniss’s main partner. I would say that The Capitol and President Snow are the main villains. Snow rules the whole capitol and is behind the games. While The Capitol treats people badly and runs the games. After the ending of the first book, Katniss and Peeta try to kill themselves so there will not be a winner. Instead, they stopped before the berries reach their mouths and are both crowned winners. They go back home to District 12 and Katniss is greeted by President Snow. He brings up concerns about a rebellion forming by their actions to end off the 74th Hunger Games. Now Katniss must continue the act of being in love with Peeta so the capitol does not her childhood friend Gale. The winners now visit the different districts on there victory tour and learn of and see different acts of rebellion. After she returns she tells Gale about and he decides he wants to stay and fight the capitol. After a public beating of Gale, Katniss realizes she is in love with him and agrees to stay instead of run with Peeta. Later she goes into the woods and meets two women. they explain they are from District Eight and are trying to find the remains of District 13 where they believe rebels are hiding. Later on, television Snow announces the before mentioned Quarter Quell. They are choosing previous winners so Katniss must go in as the only female representative of District 12. Peeta volunteers to take Haymitch’s place in the games. In the games, Katniss, Peeta, Mags, and Finnick ally. Mags sacrifices herself for the sake of Peeta, Katniss, and Finnick. They meet Johanna who is with Wiress and Beetee. Wiress gets killed before Katniss could help. They hide and Beetee comes up with a plan. He connects a wire to an electrified tree across the shore to set a trap for people crossing. katniss looks over and she sees Beetee and Johanna with the same cut while Beetee had a knife. Katniss put the wire on an arrow after figuring out what they were trying to do she shoots it in a small hole in the force field. Katniss passes out and wakes up on a hovercraft with Plutarch, (the man who taught here about the uprising) Finnick, and Haymitch. They tell her they and many other tributes were planning to escape the arena by bringing down the force field. The ship is heading towards District 13 now. They explain that they kept Peeta alive because she would only help them if Peeta did too. They ask for her help because she caused the rebellion and she accepts. Later she attacks Haymitch as she felt she was used and meets up with Gale. He explained that District 12 was bombed. He was able to save Katniss’s family and finished off the story with this quote; Katniss, “there is no District Twelve.”
I mostly enjoyed the book though at times I felt the pacing was slow. I preferred the first book more as I do with most sequels. If you read the first book I would recommend you read this one too. It would be hard to recommend this book without recommending the series so If you haven’t read any of the books yet they are a good pick up. Especially if you are a fan of dystopian novels like Divergent. My favorite part is when Katniss killed the person who killed the person who killed Mags even though they just met.
