Black Lives Matter Movement: The Pride of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Categories: Politics

For the past couple of years, the #BlackLivesMatter movement has been heard all over the country In some ways more than others, this movement is somewhat like the Civil Rights Movement. If the famous Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were still here today, I think he would be proud of the Black Lives Matter movement. I also believe that he would be disappointed to see that history is repeating itself, and that African-Americans are still enduring a racial struggle, What is really scary about history repeating itself is even in the timing In Dr.

King’s “The Other America” speech, he states, “We must still face the fact that our nation‘s summers of riots are caused by our nation’s winters of delay”, If we take a look at when the riots are most popular, we can see that there are a great number of riots and demonstrations in the summers than in the winters. In a way, Dr. King would be proud to see that people are speaking up and speaking the truth.

In his speech, he states that he “believes that freedom is the bonus for telling the truth”. To go along with that, he states that “there mttst be a recognition on the part of everybody in this nation that America is still a racist country”. Not everyone that lives in America may think that this country is still a racist country, but the black community has definitely stepped out and declared that indeed it still is.

I have no doubt that Dr. King would be proud that people are banding together to make a difference, bttt at the same time, he would be very disappointed, and probably even saddened at the number of violent acts and riots that people have conducted in, in order to get the justice that they feel they deserve. Regarding Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. ’5 speech, “Where Do We Go From Here?”, I think that he would strongly suggest to the individuals that are a part of the Black Lives Matter movement, to form programs that benefit black lives.

In his speech, he speaks of all of the different programs and initiatives that the Southern Christian Leadership Conference implemented, and how they affected the black community, If Dr. King were to see the movement today, he would probably explain the results that he and his followers experienced when they put their foot down and did things that they could benefit from, since it was clear that the American government was not going to be of any service to them. The SCLC encouraged the Grenada County Movement which boycotted Sealtest products that were made by the white man.

The SCLC also created Operation Breadbasket that spread throughout the country from Chicago, Illinois to Cleveland, Ohio, and Atlanta, Georgia, and created more than twenty-two hundred jobs for blacks and allowed the flow of more than eighteen million dollars in income into the black community. But what Dr. King would also stress is the act of nonviolence, The Black Lives Matter movement has been very active for the last few years but unfortunately, most of it has been filled with violent acts such as the uproar and riots in Ferguson, Missouri. Dr. King states “We must massively assert ottr dignity and worth", which has been done by many individuals and groups, but often times in the wrong way. In Dr, King’s speech he says that wants to “reaffirm [his] commitment to nonviolence”, and that “nowhere have the riots won any concrete improvement such as have the organized protest demonstrations”.

He would be deeply disheartened to see black people rioting and destroying their own neighborhoods, so I believe that he would get people together and lead them in peaceful protests in order to make a change and get the justice that the black people deserve “Darkness cannot put out darkness; only light can do that,” is said in this speech and it really is true. With all of the violence occurring, people really have not seen the change that they are looking for. Overall, I think Dr. Martin Lttther King Jr, would be proud to see so many African- Americans being involved and participating in the #BlackLivesMatter movement, however, I’m sure he would have many suggestions on how to make it better and get the results that the people want.
