The first thing she states to her trainee on the very first day of school is that to write is to inform the fact, to express yourself and maybe find who you are. She would be at the library every Thursday night to load up on next week's books.

Her very first poem was "John Glenn" and had actually been sent to a California state school competitors and had won an award. Lamott had an excellent understanding of the characteristics of very first drafts; she describes them as always being terrible but essential because all great authors compose them. That terrible very first draft ends up being a terrific final draft. Some people constantly strive for perfectionism on first drafts so they won't have as much to clean up, but under all that pile of dreadful initial drafts there is the capacity of finding something incredible, a new discovery, something you didn't discover before.

A first draft is the one draft you can express yourself in, no one will see it, just let go of everything and capture your thoughts with a pencil on a piece of paper. Making mistakes the first time is natural, not everything will come out perfect. Those mistakes teach you how to live, teach you the motives of life. You have to free yourself, let go of everything. Perfectionism is the main obstacle between you and a terrible first draft. Lamott compares writing to watching a Polaroid develop; you won’t know how the picture will come out until you develop it, but before taking the picture, you have to focus on one image only, you have to look past what you know.

Bird by bird persuades you to write, to let go of everything and spill your guts out. It teaches you to look past what you know and take a new perspective of things to create something amazing. The element of style, just like Bird by Bird teaches you about the English style, it teaches you the improvement of your writing skills. Lamott explains the feeling and passion for writing and all the beauty that come as a result. She created her own writing style and uses her own kind of voice to discover the truth.
