Biodiversity loss is a current issue that is affecting the environment around the entire world. Readings from groups like The World Conversation Union (WCU), The World Wild Life Fund (WFF) and The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) have information concerning the loss of diversity in living organisms like plants, insects, land and aquatic life. The groups mentioned study the loss of biodiversity loss in our environment and how it affects society and life. The authors that publish information regarding biodiversity loss explore methods of conserving wild life and natural resources to prevent further destruction of our earth.
Authors also make it noted to publicize the issue related to biodiversity loss to make the public aware of the consequences of destroying resources, habitats, and living organisms The affects of biodiversity loss is a major concern that most people and business overlook and will destroy our natural resources people depend on for fuel, water, food, stable climate causing devastating affects. There will be four sections of this paper to show the consequences of biodiversity loss. The first section of this paper there will be a brief explanation of what biodiversity loss is.
The second will describe factors lead to loss of biodiversity loss . The third section will describe how bio-diversity loss will affect the future with sub sections about global warming, food, and the extinction of certain species. The final section is about the cost and steps to take to prevent loss in bio-diversity loss. The definition of biodiversity loss is “ Diversity among and within plant and animal species in an environment ” (Dictionary. Reference. com). For example, there are 20,000 species of bees known to man(www. pestworldforkids. org).
Biodiversity is one in itself when it comes to affecting the entire planet. Without diversity among different plants and species there would be less food, water, and natural resources. It is common knowledge that bees pollenate plants to grow, a task that mankind would not be able to do themselves on a scale large enough to feed the entire population. The importance of biodiversity is more critical than most people know. Among animal and insects there is a diversity of living plants.
Without certain plants that animals and insects depend on to live there is extension among hat species of that animal or insect The same applies to plants that depend on the the pollination of bees or the overgrowth that is cut back by deers that feed on small shrubs and fruits. The environment depends on bio-diversity to survive and to supply natural resources to be used for services like fuel, food, and water for the human race. Biodiversity loss also is studied by how it changes over time from different habitats like land, air, and sea(greenfacts. org 1). Biodiversity loss will destroy our environment and have devastating, irreversible effects.
In an article related to bio-diversity loss, prevention is key to slow down the rate of growing numbers in species that are going extinct. To prevent further loss, understanding what led to the issue is important. Biodiversity loss is caused by mankind and our growth. As we overpopulate a world by using its oil for fuel, land for agriculture, and polluting the earth with fossil fuels, biodiversity loss rates will continue to grow at its rapid rate which numbers have been seen to be higher than they ever have been before in the last 50 years(WWF).
Destroying habitats for the good of mankind is what society has decided to take on. Other factors related to the cause are the decision to cut too many trees to make paper,furniture, and burn as fuel(WWF). Information like the Millennium ecosystem assignment can be used by groups like WWF and WCU to monitor and measure the decline in diversity among different plants and animals. Programs like the WCU take action to protect wildlife and land that should not be touched by loggers,farmers, and other companies related to destroying habitats and populations of species(Greenfacts. org 6).
Prevention is the best strategy to slow biodiversity loss rates(Greenfacts. org 6). The financial aspect also is key when it comes to prevention by working with business to use less harsher chemicals. Adapting to the already changed climate will also help in the aid of biodiversity. With help of the local governments of each country, there would be a dramatic decrease in biodiversity loss if all governments enforced polices and worked together under one to achieve the goal. The government sets in places standards with the EPA to work with business to help prevent diversity loss.
Over fishing the ocean for human consumption is destroying species of fish, coral, and other plants in the ocean that aquatic life depends on: “Suitable laws and polices developed by central governments can enable local levels of government to provide resource management incentives for sustainable resource management is central to biodiversity loss” (National Science Foundation). Indeed, poor, biodiversity loss is distorted from human action. Humans contribute to the biggest loss in biodiversity from “biodiversity services“,a service that is obtained from the natural resources or environment.
For example the use from trees is used in the common house hold and over exploiting(Greenfacts. org) trees has destroyed the natrual habitat for many species and organisms to thrive as they do. All of the planets environment has been altered by mankind with irreversible affects. As a result from the destruction to habitats from mankind, biodiversity loss has led and will continue to affect our climate, our water supply and the rate in which our food grows will all be affected negatively(Greenfacts. org 2. 1).
The readers of this paper are most likely to be affected by the bio-diversity loss in their life time if the rapid growing rates continue the way they are. The rate of bio-diversity loss and its related consequences are expected to continue at a even stronger rate: The amount of agriculture land will out weigh the amount of forrest and inhabited land in the estimated next 100 years. The water that we drink may be un-bearable from the fertilizers used from farming. The population of certain organisms will be extinct if it is not at a all time low.
Natural disasters will be more frequent from the un sustainable climate change(Greenfacts. org 7). Global warming is in, fact taking place today. The Arctic Ocean is sensitive to climate changes(WWF). As the glaciers melt in the Arctic Ocean, natural disasters will occur more frequently, unstable temperature because of ocean currents, organisms will not be able to provide the services they do to the environment and the climate will harder for agriculture to adapt in regions where it is crucial for certain species of food to grow(NSF).
The biggest challenge looking forward to is to predict the combined effects of these environment challenges to natural ecosystems and to society”(Duffy/VIMS). It is not easy to predict what will make what will happen to the planet in the next 50 years without action being taken to stop biodiversity loss. Society will be affected negatively in the future if set laws and policy are not taken to control pollution and natural resource abuse. Extinction of species of plants and other living organisms should not ethically outweigh the need of lumber, over-fishing, burning dirty fuels, and wasting the environments resources.
With conservation, there comes a price. Prevention and conservation of wild life is not cheap. A cost effective solution to conservation is to prevent businesses use up natural resources in protected areas. “Protected areas are an essential part of conservation programs” (Greenlife. org 6). The estimated number of natural resources used by the world is US$33 trillion per year(WCU). In fact in the medical field, the world uses 50,000-70,000 different species of plants each year to produce medicine. The ocean is a source of food, plants, and other natural resources provided from bio-diversity.
Each year there are estimated 100 million tons used for food around the world. The content of Asia contains a primary diet of fish and other sea life as a main source of protein(WWF 2). Businesses are at risk with the increase of conservation as their production will slow down and their resources are stripped. Many companies have either over-ridden the laws, or choosing to pay fines because it is cheaper than losing numbers in production. Some companies that are trying to compromise their use of there land by increasing the number and size of there yield.
Genetically modified food has been the answer to produce fruit and vegetables faster, make them bigger, and have not been proven to be safe for human consumption. GMF’s are also under the same strategy as providing live stock with hormones to grow bigger to increase yield in meat production. This modifying of foods to save cost can be a hazard to health of consumers. The hormones farmers use to increase yield in live stock pass thru into a humans diet when consumed. This is a major concern(NSF). Biodiversity loss is a central problem for animal and plant life. There are ways to prevent the problem from continuing .
Biodiversity is caused by over using natural resources for food, fuel, and life’s necessity’s. Biodiversity loss should be something to be concerned about. The statistics show a growth in biodiversity loss at outstanding rates. Laws in regulations would help set standards for the public and businesses to prevent biodiversity loss. The earth is at risk in the future from extinction of plant and animal species. There are programs dedicated to researching and monitoring biodiversity. Any person can contribute to preventing biodiversity loss by recycling, and not wasting natural resources. Biodiversity loss effects the Earth’s environment.
