“The reality is: sometimes you lose. And you’re never too good to lose. You’re never too big to lose. You’re never too smart to lose. It happens,” said Beyonce Knowles, born September 4, 1981, in Houston, Texas. She has set the standard for women all over the world since the late 1990s and is still thriving to this day. Friendship tribulations, multiple miscarriages, weight troubles, pre-eclampsia, a cheating husband, and three kids later, she is still on top! This paper will explore Beyonce’s transition from being a member of Destiny’s Child to eventually moving into her solo career.
It will describe how the group came about, why they parted ways, how she made a name of her own.
Beyonce first made her appearance alongside three other girls in the group Girl’s Tyme. Formed out of Texas starting with Beyonce Knowles and LaTavia Roberson at the age of nine years old in 1990. In 1992, Knowles’ cousin, Kelly Rowland joined the group and lastly, LeToya Luckett joined in 1993.
Starting out, they performed at Star Search, transitioning into the club scene and shortly after opening up for artists such as SWV. The record label “Columbia” offered them their first contract in 1997, signing them as Destiny’s Child.
In 1999, the group released one of their best selling albums, “The Writings on the Wall”, which included the hit singles “Say My Name” and “Bills, Bills, Bills”. “Say My Name” won two Grammys in 2001, for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Best R&B Song, and was also named the best song of 2000.
As you can see the group was becoming bigger and more popular by the day, looking in everything looked great. But everything was not as seemed, there were some pressing issues between the members and it did not end well. Luckett and Roberson decided to leave the group because of suspected favoritism towards Rowland and Knowles. Taking their place was Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin, Franklin quit soon after joining the group in the early 2000s (Abad- Santos, vox.com) Once Franklin left, they decided to just stick with the three, Knowles, Rowland and Williams, the real and official Destiny’s Child. Due to everything, the group went through they released a third album named “Survivor (2001)”, to portray all the trials and tribulations amongst each other. Making the track “Bootylicious” their fourth #1 single in the US. The track “Survivor” was written because of the jokes made about the group losing three members, Knowles used it as fuel to take it to the top, winning Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 2002 Grammy awards.
An announcement was made in 2002 that the group was splitting in wants to pursue solo careers. Williams released her first solo gospel album “Heart To Yours”, Knowles took the music and acting world by storm, releasing her first single “Work It Out” as well as her first solo album “Dangerously in Love” and winning a lead role in the film, Austin Powers Goldmember in 2003. The group reunited in 2004 and released their fourth and final album “Destiny Fulfilled” after which splitting for good because their destiny had been fulfilled together and it was now time to do what’s best for them separately. Destiny’s Child was no more. The three are still best friends to this day and continue to support each other in any way possible.
Beyonce already had a name of her own but only from Destiny’s Child and it was time for Beyonce to have a name for Beyonce. Releasing album after album, movie after movie, and tour after tour. Making a total of nine albums, starring in over 15 movies, headlining Coachella in 2018, and seven concert tours, five of which worldwide. Her most influential work as “Lemonade”, released in 2016. After facing infidelity from her husband, their marriage was at the breaking point with minimal communication between the two. Her main message of the album was for women to not depend on a man for anything and be strong in whatever you do independently. During the song, she threw hints at who her husband cheated with lyrics such as “Becky with the good hair” hinting at her husband’s friend Rachel Ray.
