Because of the demand for human consumption, people try to find a method on how to create livestock on a mass scale, and that how factory farming is established to meet the demand. The supply and demand have to be equilibrium for goods. According to the CDC, 36.6 % of adults in the United State consumed fast food on a given day during 2013-2016. It shows how the way people eat has changed in the past decades. Because of its convenience and affordable price, the fast-food industry has grown dramatically and successfully.

We cannot deny the fact that fast food is not only inexpensive, but it tastes good as well. Therefore, it becomes one of the best options for people to choose a busy life. Have you ever wonder where those food come from and how it is produced? It’s a big question you have to ask yourself as a consumer. There is a curtain between us and where is the food come from.

We are not allowed to know the truth, because if we know it, we may not want to buy those processed products anymore.

Taking of the curtain, we can see the ugly truth about factory farming where the majority of the processed food that we purchase come from. All of the animal products are overwhelmingly produced in CAFOs as know as Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation. CAFOs is where animals are raised and feed is a crowded place. Not like traditional farming where animals have to go to find for their food, food is brought to them and feed them.

In the Food Inc. film, we can see that famers do not wants to tell people the truth, and they refuse to be interviewed because they are under controlled by big corporations. Finally, he has an interview with a farmer, Carole Morison, who’s willing t show us the dark side of factory farming. She says it comes to the point that she has to speak up. Normally, it takes three months to grow a chicken, but now it takes only 39 days and give you a chicken big as twice compared to normal chicken. They give them antibiotic to increase the growth. It seems normal, but it has a significant impact on people and the environment.

It is just an excuse to say because of demand for human consumption, the American food industry has to find the way to supply the need. In fact, The major cause that significantly contribute to the problem is profit. Profit always comes first. The faster the products they can make, the more money in their pocket. The problem is not only affect one community, but it affect everyone. First, factory farming is abusing animals. They are treated inhumane. Animals are raised in a poorly condition where they cannot see sun light, cannot move or lay down. They are feed with antibiotic which can cause antibiotic resistant bacteria that can make people sick and corn to speed up the growth to produce as quickly as possible.

Factory farming is also responsible for air and water pollution. People who live in that area are heavily affected by the factory. Factory farming reduces property value, so citizens cannot sell their houses. They end up being stuck there and suffer from polluted air and contaminated water. Factory farms can release different types of harmful gases including nitrous oxide, methane, carbon dioxide, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide into the atmosphere which extremely dangerous to local community. According to a 2006 United Nations report called “Livestock’s Long Shadow,” livestock accounts for 18% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions more than the entire transportation industry.” This is not a new issue. It has been brought up in many years, but people just ignore it. There are so many solutions that have been used to change the issue including protesting.
