The Impact of Mobsters as Saviors in Armageddon

Categories: Film

In the movie Armageddon, the evil ones are thousands of rocks led by an asteroid the size of Texas that threatens to extinguish life on Earth. The good ones are a motley makeshift group of old-drillers who will risk their lives in a daring rocket journey to save the world, with a few NASA astronauts and one Russian cosmonaut thrown in to help steer the two shuttle spacecrafts. These heroes include rig owner and drilling expert Harry Stamper, portrayed excellently by Bruce Willis, along with oil workers who are moonlighting criminals.

This raises the question of mobsters as saviors and their impact on the moral fabric of society. Despite the serious premise of the extinction of life on Earth, Armageddon is best described as an action-adventure film with sprinkles of comedy, focused on exciting and entertaining rather than educating or informing. Scientific accuracy is ignored, with the laws of physics constantly violated to enhance drama. The movie prioritizes thrilling the audience over teaching valuable life lessons, departing from the tradition of classic films that aimed to educate.

It is even more surprising that the asteroid is able to send warning signals days in advance through deadly meteor showers.

The space station orbiting Earth is the first target, drilled with holes before exploding. New York City is then bombarded with huge meteorites, decapitating the Chrysler Building and leaving the city in ruins. Shanghai falls victim several days later, and Paris is ultimately destroyed by an asteroid fragment. Despite the destruction, the strikes are well-directed, with a realistic portrayal of impact in Paris.

The movie, though unrealistic, is entertaining and action-packed, with rapid-fire images maximizing tension and masking scientific flaws. A love story between Grace Stamper, played by Liv Tyler, and A. J. Frost, played by Ben Affleck, adds a romantic element. Ultimately, these oil drillers will save humanity from destruction in the end.

In the movie, NASA officials discuss various ideas to prevent the asteroid catastrophe. Suggestions like using lasers or attaching sails are deemed impractical. The idea of using nuclear weapons is also dismissed as inadequate, as even 150 bombs would not be enough to destroy the asteroid. The proposed plan involves drilling a hole 800 feet deep, inserting a hydrogen bomb, and splitting the asteroid in two pieces that will pass Earth on opposite sides. However, the effectiveness of this plan is called into question, as a single bomb is unlikely to be sufficient to split such a massive asteroid.

When faced with life-threatening battles against Nature, can man emerge victorious? Unfortunately, the answer is often no. Whether it's a hydrogen bomb creating a crack across the state of Texas, a tornado touching down, a tsunami barreling across the ocean, a volcano ready to erupt, a hurricane approaching, or lightning striking, man's power is limited. Our best defense is usually evacuation. In these matchups of man versus Nature, Nature prevails. Solar system scientists categorize asteroids as S, C, M, and E. The creators of Armageddon have found a unique object that will change planetary science. This asteroid resembles a comet with a blue-green cloud and features treacherous terrain with jagged rocks, steep crevices, and sharp peaks unlike typical asteroids or the Moon.

The surface of the Armageddon asteroid is as intricate as a crystal chandelier, with stalagmites threatening to stab Earth's heart. However, the real danger comes from the asteroid's kinetic energy, which manifests as heat, pressure, and pounding power upon impact. This asteroid also boasts a significant atmosphere and rock storms, impeding the efforts of our heroes as rocks rain down upon them. NASA should have equipped them with steel umbrellas. The air on the asteroid contains oxygen to fuel fires, blown by a sometimes howling wind. A mysterious "fifth force" holds Stamper's crew to the surface of the asteroid, as gravity is 20 times weaker there than on Earth. A 180-pound human would only weigh 9 pounds on this asteroid.

Armageddon is an action-packed adventure where NASA astronauts save the world from a massive asteroid, also known as a "Global Killer," capable of wiping out all life, even bacteria.

Entitled Armageddon, meaning "the end of all things," this movie is based on a biblical concept. Despite containing arguments, quarrels, and tragic parts, it is an interesting film for its connection to Science, my favorite subject. While some parts are difficult to understand due to fast dialogue, the visual aspects help in comprehension. The realistic depiction of explosions, satellites, space shuttles, and asteroids in Armageddon is truly impressive. The movie successfully combines romance, comedy, and action into one entertaining package.

When the asteroids crash, all I can do is scream. In summary, Armageddon is a tragic yet wonderful movie that explores the connection between Chemistry and asteroids. The film includes aspects of Astrochemistry with its focus on asteroids and Industrial Chemistry with the oil drilling. Additionally, it delves into Nuclear Chemistry with the detonation of nuclear bombs to destroy the huge asteroid threatening Earth. Overall, Armageddon provides insights into various aspects of Chemistry.
