How many times a day do you walk through a cloud of cigarette smoke? According to the CDC, 14 out of every 100 American citizens smoke tobacco products every day. Even though these adults know what it is doing to their bodies, they still continue to smoke. That is why I believe smoking tobacco should be illegal.
1 Corinthians 6:19 says, “What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” The Bible clearly states in the verse above that our body is our temple and should be treated as a temple.
Smoking a cigarette is like going into a temple and burning the inside. Christians would be in utter dismay to know their temple had been burned by a Christian. We as Christians need to preserve the body God gave us to use until we are reunited with Him. Think about how God feels knowing that you are willingly destroying the body He gave you to use to His glory.
Secondly, many scientists have proven that smoking increases your chances of lung cancer, heart problems, and many more unwanted medical problems. If this is now common knowledge, why do we still continue to allow something that is poisoning our bodies to be sold and distributed? The CDC says in their website that one out of every five deaths in the United States are linked to smoking. That means that by making tobacco illegal, we could be saving 20 out of every 100 lives each year.
So, why are we willingly giving ourselves cancer?
Furthermore, smoking also has repercussions on those who choose not to smoke. Secondhand smoke can have detrimental effects on your health with even one occurrence. Second-hand smoking caused roughly 400 infant deaths every year. Why does the United States government not put a stop to smoking if it is hurting our youth? Smoking around others can give them respiratory infections as well as other serious illnesses that could require hospitalization. So, every time someone smokes a cigarette, they are endangering the lives of other people. It would be like letting someone without a driver’s license drive a car in a crowded city. What do you think the outcome would be?
In conclusion, I believe that smoking tobacco products should be illegal in the United States not only for the smokers themselves but the safety of others. If the government decides to ban the smoking of tobacco, they will have my full support.
