In Go Tell It on the Mountain, Baldwin uses artforms in his text to show the different moods one can feel while going through different tribulations in life. ” While on the Indian side he associates his life as having a, “vanishing past,” having a, “family history of diabetes and cancer,” and a, “bone crushing reality.” He believes that attending an all White school and being, “half white,” he is more prone to having a better life than being Indian because they will remain in poverty, and not have a good future. In “Go Tell It on the Mountain” by James Baldwin, one of the characters who is not given a separate chapter is Roy. Roy is a non-believer living a sinful life and does not understand his origin and the expectations of the society but begins to develop an open-minded approach to life throughout the book. He is not concerned about the metaphysical changes that plague the minds of most of the people around him including John. He is a free-soul whose affiliation to religion remains questioned.

In other words, he lives recklessly which hurts his parents and his brother because they expect much more from him. They expect him to be a religious person who will impact the family and the society in a positive way whenever. Roy is a short form for Royal but the way he acts does not reflect royalty. He is expected to be a royal descendant of a kingdom but chooses to live as a prince of the world. Unlike John, who is dedicated and restrained in nature, Roy is careless about his life and does not welcome the Lord to shine light in his paths. Roy is a complex character because he lives a sinful life and fails to acknowledge his important role in spreading the biblical principles. Since he is living in sinful ways, the lord deserts him. Then when he gets into a fight and is injured, God does not help. This symbolizes God’s anger towards him and sinners.
