An Argument Against the Ultimate Dress Code in Schools

School systems have used many different ways to keep tract of their students and not let anyone who is not their student on campus. Andrew Jackson, like so many other districts, started to enforce a dress code. All students must wear a white shirt and navy or kaki pants with a belt. I am not trying to bash the school boards method of discipline; I just believe that some methods of punishments and some of the violations people incur could be overlooked more often.

Dress codes should be enforced in a way that will not take the student away from valuable class time.

In the years that I attended Andrew Jackson before dress codes had been enforced, I had always been an honor roll student. I had never been in any trouble and had never had a detention. After dress codes were enforced, I started to get violations. In one instance, I had on a pair of shoes that were black and white, the schools dress code policy for shoes, but was in violation because it had too much black and white in them.

Since I had those shoes on, I missed the rest of the day of school. Is this what is supposed to be happening? I thought that school was a place to learn. I know that we would not have these problems if we all just followed the rules, but even you, the principle, have to say some of the violations that the school board comes up with are truly far fetched.

Violations such as students wearing ankle socks, colored undershirts, and the type of bra should not keep a student from missing valuable class time. A number of students I know had missed test and other important classroom assignments that they now cannot make up. The penalties for these infractions are too harsh and I hope you can do something about this.

The next subject I would like to get to is the infractions and how far fetched they are. My friend Cher was sitting in the assistant principles office all day. Her infraction, so to speak, was her shirt being a little tight and being able to see the lining of her braw through the shirt. When my friend told me what had happened, I could not stop laughing. Is their even a written rule stating what kind of bra is acceptable? The kinds of socks we can wear have also come into play. I cannot see how which type of sock a person decides to wear makes any kind of difference in the classroom or for that matter keeping track of your students. Girls’ everyday gets into trouble for wearing ankle socks. Why does this happen? What exactly is the reason for girls not being allowed to wear those types of socks? Now I am getting to a more serious problem dealing with a close friend of mine. She got into trouble for wearing a kaki colored jacket in the classroom. The rule enforced is that a student cannot wear a jacket indoors unless the temperature outdoors is below a certain degree. The student was wearing the jacket because she was wearing a uniform sweatshirt, but was still cold. She was pulled out of her class and sat in the office until her mom came to get her. Then for wearing the jacket, she got a detention. To make things worse, her mom did not agree with any of what happened and told her daughter she was not going to serve the detention. Instead of the assistant principle lessening the punishment to make peace, she still enforced it. Since the student already stated she was not serving it, Megan was suspended.

In all of society’s work places, we have to face many rules and dress codes that will be enforced in many ways. In this situation, many infractions could be overlooked or warned about without making a scene or over reacting in front of fellow workers. I believe that you should do a thorough examination of how the dress code is being enforced. Students should not be taken away from class time to be sat in the office the entire day for wearing ankle socks. I believe that the faculty and staff should sit down together and come up with a solution to this problem because I know first-hand that many of the teachers do not agree with everything that is done.
