An Analysis of Schizophrenia in the Movie "A Beautiful Mind"

The movie, A Beautiful Mind (Howard, 2001) is a biological tale of John Nash, a well-renowned Economic professor and Nobel Prize winner. In 1948, Nash started graduate school at Princeton and did not have many friends. He wanted to create a mathematical theorem that was unheard of, and unique. John did not attend class much during graduate school and was obsessed with figuring out a mathematic theorem. His first attempt was a failure and it caused John to become a mess.

He went a bar with his friends one night, and finally discovered a mathematical solution to women, a solution that most men would love to figure out.

Soon after graduate school, Nash becomes a professor at MIT (Massachusetts Institution of Technology) and meets a student there by the names of Alicia. Not long later, Alicia and John get married and have a child. Throughout the movie, Nash has a best friend and roommate named Charles.

They do everything together and Charles always finds a way to make Nash feel better about things and situations.

John also meets Charles' niece Marcee, whom he adores. Nash also believes that he is working for the United States army, figuring out codes in magazines and newspapers from Russia. His office at MIT is completely covered with clippings and articles that he thinks may be important to Parcher, an agent from the government that is his boss. Nash thinks that he takes the clippings to a mailbox at a mansion and believes that his family will be endangered if he does not.

John's wife believes that there is something wrong with John, and calls Dr. Rosen, a psychiatrist in their area.

Once Dr. Rosen sees John he tells Alicia that all of those people that John knows like, Charles, Parcher, and Marcee are not real. They are all just made up in John's mind because John has a disorder called Schizophrenia. Schizophrenia can be defined with reasonable agreement, but its etiologies and pathophysiologies are not yet known (Andreasen & Carpenter, 1993). Schizophrenia is clinical syndrome of both extraordinary importance and extraordinary complexity (Andreasen & Carpenter, 1993). Schizophrenia is a very rare disease and only about 1% of the population has this disorder. (Oltsmanns & Emery, 2012).

The Diathesis-Stress model is always a way to figure out what causes a mental disorder. The diathesis is the underlying cause of the disorder, such as a bad home life as a child or being sexually abused as a child are just some examples of diathesis. The stress is the trigger or what causes someone to finally get the disorder. One article states that Uncertainty about what constitutes accurate diagnosis greatly complicates etiologic research and likely contributes to the lack of discovery of a specific causal factor for schizophrenia, despite decades of intensive investigation (Conklin & Iacono, 2003).

The question of whether schizophrenia is associated with structural or functional abnormalities of the nervous system, or both, has become the principal focus of biological studies of schizophrenia (Meltzer, 1987). There are many biological factors that are involved with Schizophrenia. Dopamine (DA) remains the neurotransmitter most likely to be involved in schizophrenia, although there is also evidence for disturbances of serotonin and norepinephrine (Meltzer, 1987).
