Adult Literacy Program
I chose to write about adult literacy. This is a very serious subject that affects more people that we realize. Literacy is the ability to read, write, compute, and use technology at a level that enables an individual to reach his or her full potential as a parent, employee, and community member. There are many programs that helps can assist with literacy. One program is the National Assessment of Adult Literacy (NAAL). This program is a nationally representative assessment of English literacy among American adults age 16 and older.
In 2003, over 19,000 adults participated in the national and state-level assessments, representing the entire population of U. S. adults who are age 16. The NAAL is designed to measure functional English Literacy. Those measures are broken into three types of literacy programs Prose, Document, and Quantitative. This is because adults use different types of written and printed materials in their daily lives. The Prose literacy program is the knowledge and skills needed to perform prose tasks, (i. e. , to search, comprehend, and use continuous texts).
The Document literacy program is the knowledge and skills needed to perform document tasks, (i. e. , to search, comprehend, and use non-continuous texts in various formats). And the Quantitative literacy program the knowledge and skills required to perform quantitative tasks, (i. e. , to identify and perform computations, either alone or sequentially, using numbers embedded in printed materials). Adult literacy is much deeper than many people know about and it reflects on all level. Adult learning and education including literacy ties in with David Kolb’s learning styles model and experiential learning theory.
Kolb’s learning theory sets out four distinct learning styles (or preferences), which are based on a four-stage learning cycle. Regardless of the learning styles in order for someone to learn effectively the instructor must be able to focus on where that individual needs help and to be able to provide the instructional teaching so that they can comprehend and begin the process of learning to read. Reading should be something every individual should know how to do. You need to know how to read to drive, to cook, to be able to your medication basically for everything.
That’s way it’s important for a teacher of instructor to come up with an effective plan so that everyone can do so. It just may save their life. The setting would be on the local community college campus in the evening hours. Being in a traditional classroom is more effective because everyone have a better chance to recognize the letters and words to begin their learning. Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience. Knowledge results from the combination of grasping experience and transforming it.
– Kolb (1984, 41). And this is how Kolb’s learning theories and strategies come in effect. Kolb recognizes that everyone has different learning styles which are a better reason to learn in a classroom environment. In a traditional classroom setting it gives the instructor a chance to recognize your learning style. Having an effective learning/teaching strategy when teaching someone how to read is critical. Adult literacy instructors should use a variety of tools and methods to determine the preferred ways a student approaches learning.
Researchers have identified instructional strategies that show positive, measurable effects on student achievement. One providing students with specific learning objectives before each lesson, providing feedback on the processes and strategies students use, and giving students time to consider how to approach a task, then reminding students to activate specific thinking behaviors. Another way is engaging the adult student hands-on lessons that require students to use multiple learning skills and higher-order thinking to construct meaning and knowledge.
This can happen once the learner has a chance to recognize letters and placing those letters into word and then eventually reading. Adult development theories provide a framework for understanding how adult learners are different from younger learners, while also providing insight into devising better professional development programs. As an adult literacy instructor your learning style will affect the way you approach instruction and this may not fit with your students’ learning styles.
One theory of adult development focuses on age. Even though a lot of adults are returning to college it’s a lot of adults that still do not know how to read. That’s why it’s very important for the instructor to come up with effective measures and strategies that are effective so that they can learn. The Age and Stage theory reflects a lot on adult learning. Age theorist reported age-related periods of life and focused on the problems and personal issues that affected adults at certain ages.
The Stage theory found that adults moved through various stages of development. As adults as we begin to age become more reflective of their lives and of their careers. We make more informed decisions about their future. Things that we didn’t do as children like learning to read is something that preys upon a person and their focus comes on learning to read. When assessing the role when it comes to technology you can have individuals do assessments on the internet to assist with their learning.
Independent practice/homework Research shows the positive effects of homework can be greatly increased when assignments are regular and not too lengthy provide practice in skills and procedures targeted in recent instruction, and elicit teacher feedback. Technology is improving every minute and there are a lot of assessments, practice test, reading tutorials, etc. that is available on line to help individuals when working and learning alone. In the end it’s good to know that everyone learns differently and has different learning habits.
Adult learners and instructors alike have had years to develop these habits. To help ensure that your teaching method is clear adult literacy instructors should become aware of their own learning preferences, as these personal preferences will affect their approaches to instruction. And most important instructors may need to modify their instructional approaches as much as possible to better fit the learning styles of their learners. Adult literacy rate is the percentage of people ages 15 and above who can, with understanding, read and write a short, simple statement on their everyday life.
It’s time to wake up The United States ranks fifth on adult literacy skills when compared to other industrialized nations. In the U. S. , 63 million adults — 29 percent of the country’s adult population —over age 16 don’t read well enough to understand a newspaper story written at the eighth grade level. Reading for some individuals may improve our economy. Low literacy’s effects cost the U. S. $225 billion or more each year in non-productivity in the workforce, crime, and loss of tax revenue due to unemployment.
As one we can improve these stats.
