Actual and Perceived Inner City Families
Normally, poverty results to poor educational background. A poor family can hardly send their children to school. The situation results to high rate of illiteracy in poor communities in terms of formal education. Aside from that, poor educational background makes an individual difficult to find job due to poor qualifications. Children who belong to poor family cannot concentrate well on its studies since financial hardships can prevent them to study well. For example, the family’s lack of resources stresses their ability to pay the bills.
This bill may include rent for the house, payment of electricity use and other basic financial obligations. Parents get pressure from their landlords about their payment of house rent. Under such heavy stress, parents begin to fight over depleting financial resources. Source of funding is not certain and the needs of the children are increasing. Subsequently, the children react to the stress since their parents are fighting and their newly imposed poverty and difficulties so that they start to rebel.
Their participation of school activities suffer and truancy as another problem in schools frequently exists. The school then will call the attention of parents due to the truancy of their problematic children which in turn add to the parent’s already stressful situation. As a result, the parent’s coping abilities are gradually eaten away (Ashman and Hull, 1999, p. 356). The parents may loose its ability to guide their children in attending classes which could lead to failure in completing an educational requirement. That is the reason why there are so many people who did not even finish high school.
Unemployment problems would then continue to exist due to poor educational background. For actual poor families, their view on education is different. For them, educating their children is a waste of time since they thought that there is work even if a person was not fully educated. There are many family values related to education and these are individuality, integrity, industry, knowledge, and optimism. Based on these values, we can conclude that actual families just think of the present circumstances and do not mind the future.
For example, think of the children who are forced to work on the streets. Is it not that the existence of child labor is a proof that actual poor families opt to let their children work than to go to school? Certainly, child labor is one problem that reflects how insufficient the income of actual families on inner cities is. However, we must think that some parents in actual inner city families that are so slothful that they let their children work while they were busy with other unimportant things for their convenience.
All in all, it is just a matter of values and how it is practiced by family members. In terms of individuality, these children who are working in the streets learned to strive on their own to think that they are too young to earn a living. But at a young age, they learn to be dishonest because that is what they witness from their older friends in the streets. The capability and compassion of the parents to teach their children the value of integrity can change the aforementioned situation.
It may not be bad at all for the parents in actual families to teach their children to work at a young age; yet educating them is still the best remedy of poverty. There are actual families whose parents worked hard to send their children to school that became wealthy after so many years. The same is true when actual families believe in optimism while working hard to let their children finish a course while making both ends meet the hard way. Let us examine the views of perceived families on inner cities which are more likely to aspire more.
The values of individuality, integrity, knowledge, and optimism prove to be their main thread for survival. For instance, when parents know that there is a pressure on their part to pay a house rent, they tend to look for a solution of the problem rather than to quarrel about the situation. There will be no stress on the part of the children since they witness that their parents work hard when problems occur. In turn, the children will help in establishing the family’s financial independence. They would also work after they attended school in order to add the income of the family.
The problems of truancy and juvenile delinquency do not always occur in perceived families since family values are taught in words and in actions. Perceived poor families surely value integrity in the sense that parents teach their children responsibility of their actions. They also teach their children that they should try to do right things (Ashman and Hull, 1999, p. 356). Aside from that, parents in perceived families teach their children the values of knowledge which is using knowledge in doing right things.
There is a connection of these values to the fact that we are free to choose our actions but indeed we are not free to choose the consequences of our actions. Parents in perceived families are aware about this that their children grow with the right conduct and character. Motivation is the right attitude that perceived families will be able to fight against poverty. Parents of perceived families usually motivate their children to study hard since they believe that having a good educational background is a primary factor in having a good job.
