Abortion: Murder or Not

When does life begin? This would seem like a simple question but it is the basis of the pro or anti-abortion debate. We are going to find out the facts, the pros and cons of abortion, what the deontological and relativism perspectives are and what my personal opinion is on abortion. Some of the material you are going to read will not only shock you but break your heart so, get ready because here it comes. Abortion is it murder or a way to have a better, easier life when an unplanned pregnancy occurs? What is an abortion?

What actually takes place during an abortion? Planned Parenthood says an abortion is “the termination and expulsion of a pregnancy before birth. ” (http://www. plannedparenthood. org/health-topics/glossary-4338. htm#a) There are two different kinds of in-clinic abortions. “The most common is called aspiration. It is also known as vacuum aspiration. Aspiration is usually used up to 16 weeks after a woman’s last period. ” (http://www. plannedparenthood. org/health-topics/abortion/in-clinic-abortion-procedures-4359. sp)

There is also dilation and evacuation also known as D&E. A D&E is performed after 16 weeks of pregnancy and the doctor dilates the woman’s cervix and “in later second-trimester procedures, you may also need a shot through your abdomen to make sure there is fetal demise before the procedure begins,”(Planned Parenthood) the doctor then uses medical tools and a suction device to remove the baby’s remains. This is what happens during legal abortions, during illegal abortions women have abortions far into their pregnancies and have partial birth abortions.

A partial birth abortion is when the doctor removes the baby from the uterus with the exception of the baby’s head and the uses scissors or some other sharp object and inserts it into the head of the baby and spreads it open and then sucks out the baby’s brain until the head collapses and then the baby is then removed completely from the mother. Abortion is not always safe for the mother, many woman have died from legal abortions not to mention all the women that have died from illegal abortions. Abortion is also very emotional for both the mother and father of the baby. Abortion has caused many women to have “post abortion depression.

Lastly, 94 % of women that have abortions regret their decision. Now that we have those questions answered, I would like to give you some insight on the baby’s development. At the age of 18 days of fetal development the baby has a heartbeat. 28 days after conception the baby has eyes, ears and a tongue. Day 42 the baby’s brain waves can be detected and at 45 days the baby begins to wiggle and move around. At 8 weeks gestation the baby looks like a miniature baby. 10 weeks old they are sensitive to touch meaning they feel pain. 4 1/2 Months from conception: Still very small (less than 8 inches in length), the baby can have dream (REM) sleep. http://prolifeacrossamerica. org/baby-developmental-facts/)

With all that being revealed about the development of the baby how can anyone not agree that life begins at conception. No matter in or out of the womb a baby is a baby and should be treated as such. What are the advantages and disadvantages of deciding to have an abortion? Most women that decide to have an abortion do so mainly because they did not want a baby or it just was not the “right” time in their lives but, there is a small number of situations where women have an abortion because they were too young, raped or because of a medical condition.

Becoming pregnant at a young age not only is difficult emotionally but could also prevent them from finished school and then they would not have the ability to get a good paying job. “ For someone who has just gone through a very emotionally, psychologically, and physically traumatic experience, the thought of being responsible for carrying, giving birth to, and raising a child that resulted from the rape can be much too overwhelming. ” (http://www. prosandconsofabortion. org/) It is believed by some that if a child was born that was the product of rape they would be neglected and be raised with a loveless relationship.

There are also situations where if a woman continues with the pregnancy she could lose her life or the baby could be deformed in some way. These are the advantages for abortion, we will now move on to the disadvantages of abortion. The disadvantages of having an abortion can be quite severe. “The side effects associated with abortion can be physical and/or psychological in nature. It is very common for women who have had an abortion to later struggle with feelings of regret, shame, and depression about the decision they made. ” (http://www. prosandconsofabortion. rg/) Some women become infertile after having an abortion.

Also some women are more likely to have miscarriages, premature birth, and pregnancy/birthing complications later in life. There are lots of advantages and disadvantages to having an abortion and it should really be giving a lot of thought before following through with it because it is permanent. What is the deontological perspective on abortion? “The deontologist argues that we have a duty, or an obligation, to treat other people with respect; human beings have dignity, and we must take that dignity into consideration when dealing with them. (Mosser, 2010) The deontological perspective believes that when a mother becomes pregnant she has a duty to the child she is carrying to take care of and protect him or her. If this woman decides to have an abortion she is not fulfilling her duty to the child.

“On average, women give at least 3 reasons for choosing abortion: 3/4 say that having a baby would interfere with work, school or other responsibilities; about 3/4 say they cannot afford a child; and 1/2 say they do not want to be a single parent or are having problems with their husband or partner. ” (http://www. bort73. com/abortion_facts/us_abortion_statistics/) All of these reasons are inconveniences and do not interfere with their duty to take responsibility for the child. Another deontological perspective is that they believe in the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. ” (Mosser, 2010)

In other words you would not allow a doctor to kill your baby when they are out of the womb so why allow them to kill them while in the womb. Abortion is murder; murder is illegal, why isn’t abortion illegal? What is the ethical relativism perspective on abortion? Ethical relativism insists that there is no right or wrong, but that such evaluative terms must be understood relative to a culture, a society, or even an individual. ”(Mosser, 2010) People with this point of view are most likely against abortion for themselves or their family but look the other way if someone else has it done. They would make statements like “if you do not like abortion then do not have one,” or “I do not support abortion personally but will fight for your right to have one. ” Relativism is very contradicting.

They say I wouldn’t do that but you have the right to go right ahead. Mosser says that, “Relativism seems to offer a plausible, if not easy, way out of confronting ethical dilemmas. Many argue, however, that it may be an easy way out. It may, for instance, commit us to accepting practices that we might (“deep down”) regard not as wrong relative to a culture, but simply wrong. ” (Mosser, 2010) People nowadays are so afraid they are going to offend someone that they become someone with ethical relativism to protect them from actually giving their full opinion.

They get to hide behind their politically correct answer to the hard questions instead of stepping up and saying how they really feel on the subject at hand. Relativism gives people that soft place to land during an argument they are uncomfortable talking about but it also can prevent bad situations from getting any better. If no one will speak for the unborn babies then he or she will not be heard and abortions will continue killing millions of innocent babies so that their parents can live their lives without the inconvenience of a baby around.
