Abortion has been a controversial subject in America, especially since it became legal. Having an abortion is harmful and deadly not only to the child, but also to the mother. How is abortion harmful to the mother? Studies have shown that abortion is harmful to the mother: physically, mentally, and spiritually.
The Supreme Court voted 7-2 making abortion legal in America, on January 22 1973. This was considered a major victory for the feminist movement. A big argument for the feminist movement is “my body, my choice”.
This argument is invalid because life starts at conception, which has been scientifically proven, so this statement used by the feminist takes away basic human rights from the child. Since abortion was legalized, 61,628,584 abortions have been performed. In 2019 alone, 862,320 babies were lost. In 2017, an abortion took place every 34 seconds. Due to new technology with ultrasounds, abortions have decreased slightly since 2017 to present.
There are two different types of abortion. The first type happens in the early stages of pregnancy, which is a medical abortion.
In a medical abortion, you take medication that blocks the hormone progesterone and the uterus to contract and expel the baby. In a surgical abortion, sometimes they use a 10-inch needle to inject the child with poison, which the child can feel, and slowly and painfully dies. The baby is then removed with a vacuum and the uterus scraped for any remaining parts. Sometimes this abortion is performed while the child is still living.
Abortion is physically harmful to the mother. Having an abortion puts the mother at risk for ovarian cancer and breast cancer later in life.
If an abortion goes wrong, the mother could bleed to death, or become infertile. The mother is also at risk for infections. Abortion is legal, but not always safe for the mother. 68,000 women die of unsafe abortions each year worldwide. 5 million will suffer long-term health complications.
Abortion is mentally harmful for the mother. Even though they “fix” their current circumstance, the mental scars will always be there. The guilt of ending their child’s life often leads to depression. There is a high guilt rate for women after an abortion, compared to other medical procedures. Women that have an abortion are 3 times more likely to commit suicide then the general population. Many women are so ashamed of their actions, that they don’t ask for the help they desperately need. Women that seek help, don’t always know where to find it without being judged.
Abortion is spiritually devastating for the mother. After an abortion woman tend to feel hopeless and unloved. As Christian, we know that every life is important. Ephesians 2:10 says “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them”. God creates every person special and unique. He forms them in their mother’s womb. Psalm 139:14 says “I will praise Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well”. For a non-Christian who has had an abortion, they try to justify their actions by the world philosophies, but being created in Gods image, in their heart they know it’s wrong. The hope and forgiveness they need can be found in Christ. For the Christian who has an abortion, they definitely know it’s wrong, but based on their circumstances may change their view to cope with their actions. Jesus died on the cross for every sin, even the sin of abortion. I John 1: 9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”. After a traumatic experience such as abortion, God is the only one you can go to take away your pain and suffering. God offers hope and forgiveness and can use your story to help another woman struggling with her views on abortion.
In conclusion, having an abortion is not only harmful and deadly to the child, it’s also very harmful to the mother. Abortion is harmful to the mother physically. Abortion puts the mother at risk for diseases, cancers, and can even be fatal. Abortion is harmful to the mother mentally. Many mothers feel guilt which often leads to depression. This untreated can lead to the women committing suicide. Abortion is harmful to the mother spiritually. Abortion makes women feel hopeless and unloved, but Gods forgiveness helps them cope with their guilt and find healing.
