A Study of the Maya's Relationship with Their Land

In society today, the way one treats and regards the land people live on is mainly because of science, but for the Maya this relationship was very different. For instance, when the Dust Bowl occurred and contributed to the Great Depression, scientists could identify that this was due to over farming. As Steinberg noted, parts of the Great Plains and Midwest benefited from a location with deep, rich soil. Coupled with more modern technology and knowledge, Americans now can identify how their relationship with the Earth is affecting everyone on a broad scale, and they can then take action.

The "proper way" to treat one's environment has been based on years of international scientific knowledge and precedent. However, when the Maya city-states existed, such technology did not exist, and science was not as progressive as it is now. When the Maya encountered problems, such as those due to over farming, they would relate them to how they might have disrespected their gods.

This explanation led them to taking actions such as performing human sacrifice to demonstrate their value and faith in the gods, and then hoping this would result in a better crop. Certain myths could explain why humans were supposed to have admiration for the gods, and how they were supposed to use their land. Specifically this is described in the Popul-Vuh (which has been regarded as the Maya "bible") through a creation myth. Because of their distinct belief that their crops were a gift, Maya interacted with their land respectfully solely due to their beliefs and religion.
