A Song That I Admire and I Am Ready to Listen Forever

The piece I chose for my blog is the song “Brooklyn Baby” performed by Lana Del Rey and is composed by Barrie O'Neill and Lana Del Rey herself. The song Brooklyn baby is classified as “Dream Pop”. Dream Pop is a style of music that has a sonic texture and atmosphere as much as melody. The song overlaps with the related genre “Shoegazing.” Shoegazing is described by a mixture of vocals, guitar distortion, effects, feedback, and extremely loud music Brooklyn baby is such a strong song due to it’s dynamics, the song starts out as soft and throughout the chorus the song becomes louder and picks back up.

The intro of Brooklyn baby has a repeating chord progression that is played by a guitar. Phrase 1 of this song is “My boyfriends in a band, and he plays guitar while I sing Lou Reed.” Phrase 2 is “I got feathers in my hair I get down to beat poetry.” This peace sounds Consonant because the pitches of this song are compatible and it is a very relaxing song.

The song is loud but it is not stressful, the sound of Del’ Rey’s voice is breathy and the reverb effects add depth and texture to the song. Del Rey’s vocals and the beat of the song are compatible. Throughout the song we have a contrast. When Del Rey sings “Yeah my boyfriend's pretty cool but he’s not as cool as me., there is added male vocalist. The male singer is Lou Reed.

His voice sounds faint because he passed away just before he was supposed to join Del Rey on this song, so this may be a tribute song. I also believe this song has a contrast, when Del Rey usually says “Well my boyfriend is in the band, he plays guitar when I sing Lou Reed I got feathers in my hair I get down to beat poetry.

”There is a difference near the end of the song where later on Del Rey sings “Well my boyfriend's in the band, he plays guitar while I sing Lou Reed I got feathers in my hair, I get high on hydroponic weed.” I feel like the surface rhythm of this part is slower than the rest of the song. I believe Del Rey slows this part of her singing and beat when she sings that she gets high on weed as a shock factor for listeners. I know it is quite a shock factor for her fans when she sings the song live and all of them go nuts when she sings that part because its shocking and different. Del Rey doesn't actually smoke weed but this song is about impersonating a basic New York hipster.

My reaction to this piece is I love it. I always enjoyed the song’s beat and lyrics so it was interesting to be able to do some research on it. Everytime I would listen to Brooklyn Baby I would wonder what instruments are in the song and now I finally did the research to know. The instruments used in Brooklyn baby was a electric guitar, percussion, mellotron, tambourine, tenor saxophone, upright bass, and the drums. This song sounds so smooth and dreamy and it always relaxes me because of the amount of the layers combined really makes it enjoyable for me to hear. My favorite part of the piece is when the music slows done and Lana says she is talking about her generation and she says if you don’t like her generation you can “beat it baby” this part to me is so cool how it slows down like that to tell her listeners a message. I really enjoy the mixture of vocals, guitar distortion, effects, feedback and are some really enjoyable parts of the layers on sounds in this piece. I love how breathy her voice sounds and how it intertwines with the beat. This is one of my favorite Lana Del Rey songs.
