Discuss a significant obstacle that you have overcome. Explain how it impacted your life and describe the lesson(s) learned. “The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers.” We find our strength to go on when we least expect it.
The fight, hope, and willingness comes when we feel there is nothing left. Obstacles are minor setbacks but everyone has the power to get pass then if they just believe.
While growing up in this society I have encountered many things and I have overcome them all. Being an African American woman raised in a poor community I’ve seen, heard about, and been through so many situations. At an young age I was introduced to gang violence, living in a home with a father who abused drugs, having a mother who was barely there, but most of all being raped, a life changing experience.
They say you never know someones story until you’ve been in their shoes and I completely believe that. At just nine years old my whole childhood was taken away in the matter of seconds. Nothing but pain was inflicted on me when the man I called my father came into my room and raped me. He had changed my life forever without even caring about what he had done.
Your father is supposed to be a person you idolize and admire, yet mine was someone I felt nothing but hate for.
I had been broken by my father time and time again as a result of his drug use he had debased my body, soul, and mind. I was tormented by living every day in a home with him, seeing his face, made me feel as though I could not escape. Taking his abuse hurt me more than physically but mentally as well. I was never able to grasp the concept of why he wounded me. Lucky for me my uncle Richard got out of jail and got me involved in man activities that kept me out of the house. Richard gave me a reason smile again and live like a regular teenager. Sadly shortly after his release my uncle was brutally murdered. This was tragic for me my I thought I’d never be happy again. When you’re unhappy you start to do thing that you thought you never would. I had gotten so depressed I went to the action of suicide. I tried to overdose on some medication but my sister came home just in time to safe me.
That following Sunday my family made me go to church and I remember the pastor saying “God won’t put you through anything you can’t handle”. Those simple words changed my life. Hearing that gave me strength to carry on and move forward in life. I’ve come across so many ups and downs, and I thought I had no other choice but to give up but I didn’t. Everything I had been through just gave me more inspiration to live and be happy. Obstacles are a part of life and from them you learn how to have hope and keep living. The feeling you get after you’ve overcome something is so great that you like at the things you been through as just steps you took to get to your amazing future.
