A Review of the Humorous and Creative Novel Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

After a long and ostracized summer at the Dursley’s and a short stay at Ron Weasly’s house, Harry, the main character, returns back as a second year student at Hogwarts, a school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Prior to his return, he is confronted by a house elf named Dobby, who advises him not to go back because of the danger that awaits him. However, Harry believes no part of this and pushes him aside. At his arrival, he finds himself in danger, as mentioned by Dobby.

Mysterious things begin to happen, for example the spooky voices only heard by Harry. A message on a wall states, “The Chamber Of Secrets Has Been Opened. Enemies of the heir beware.” The heir of Slytherin could only open the chamber. Before long, students who encountered this grotesque monster became petrified and literally stood motionless somewhat like a statue. Harry and his companions, Ron and Hermione, work vigorously to solve this mystery.

Investigations lead to Ginny Weasley and a secret diary she writes in.

This diary was none of the ordinary; it belonged to Tom Marvolo Riddle, (which unscrambled was “I Am Lord Voldemort”). Harry had had encounters with Lord Voldemort, and this would be the third. In the book, Voldemort captures Ginny and brings her down the chamber, and lures Harry down also. When Harry arrives, Voldemort is waiting and calls out a basilisk, a big venomous snake. To Harry’s pleasure, Fawkes, a phoenix soars into the chamber with the sorting hat.

The phoenix fights a long gory battle with the basilisk and comes out victorious. Harry puts on the sorting hat and asks for help, and a sword appears and quickly he sticks the sword though the diary in order to defeat Voldemort. Fawkes brings Harry and Ginny to back to safety.

The main character, Harry Potter is a young boy with messy hair and glasses who became well known within the wizard community by surviving the attack of a powerful wizard. Harry frequently finds himself in dangerous adventures but always lives to tell the saga. Harry’s character demonstrates good intentions, innocence, courage and loyalty. His courage comes to play when he is exploring the dangerous woods during the middle of the night, and the battle between Voldemort and himself.

A theme that is present though the novel is, “A person is innocent till proven guilty.” This is showed when Harry, Ron, and Hermione accuse Draco Malfoy and his companions, that they opened the chamber. This was very wrong because they had no evidence that they did this act, they just jumped the gun and started the name game. Another example is when the kids blame Harry for the petrified kids. Again, they did no have the evidence for their conclusions; Harry was just at the wrong places at the wrong times. In addition to the themes mentioned, perseverance was another one. This is demonstrated to the failed attempts in finding out who opened the chamber, and the petrifying of the kids. When they reached a dead end, they just backed up and tried again. They went to drastic measures to solve the mystery and they never gave up even if it meant death.

This book would grab the attention from the first chapter through to the very last page. The novel is humorous and creative. The whole book was suspenseful and was so exciting, it was hard to put down. I recommend this book to anyone who would like a break from reality and is looking forward to a book of laughter and wizardry. To make this book even better, more adventures and extra magical words could be added. This would enhance the level of enjoyment.
