This true story By Norman Maclean, begins with Norman and his brother Paul. They live in western Montana near the junction of the great trout rivers. Cold streams filled with trout captivate Paul and Norman from a very early age. Norman and Paul were fly fisherman, fishing the Big Blackfoot River. Every morning they are homeschooled by their father in the subjects of math, history, and writing. In the afternoons Norman and Paul hurry out to the rivers to fly fish, Norman and Paul become excellent fly fisherman, and happily live out their childhood.
”In our family, there was no clear line between religion and fly fishing. There father, the town minister, blends in the boy’s religion into their fly fishing excursions. I will now read an excerpt from the book describing this: “He told us about Christ’s disciples being fishermen, and we were left to assume, as my brother did, that all first-class fishermen on the Sea of Galilee were fly— fishermen, and that John, the favorite, was a dry-fly fisherman.
However, when Norman leaves to go to college, everything changes. Both boys mature, but fly fishing is still a hobby. When Norman returns to Montana his brother is a drunk, and a gambler. He is also in extreme debt due to his gambling habits. Their father is beside himself about Paul’s circumstances but does not know what to do. Luckily, Paul’s “habits” can be undone. He has ajob at the local newspaper, and is slowly paying off the debt, However, after a terrible night of drinking and gambling, Paul’s circumstances take a turn for the worst, What will happen to Norman and Paul? Will Paul pierce his life together? Find out by reading A River Runs Through It.
i liked this book because of it’s good morals, intensity, and well planned plot twists, I am not sure if this book is available in the library.
