A Serene Autumn Lunch Break

Categories: Short Story

It was a gorgeous day and the start of fall around twelve noon, to be accurate, and I was on my routine lunch break. The birds chirped a melody of happiness and the turf stood perfectly even and glimmered a dark satin green. It was a day I wished to be to additional thankful for because of the lovely surrounding natures had provided for the day, however sadly life had a captain hook to toss at me that would rather make me want I was blind to everything in life.

It struck me right in the face and wanted to leave me on the schools dirty pavement in the hallway.

The pain remained in my heart not my face, all I was is surprised by this time. The sound of the birds and beautiful turf didn't exist anymore, however the sensation of being alone and puzzled did now. We were inseparable they say, and bonded by a sensation so deep one could not dare attempt to tare us apart.

Anyway, when the tune of the birds passed away and the lawn palled of it's color, I just knew it was time to enable my dad to lastly be there for me and come get me out of school. After my daddy signed me out of school I sat lank and motionless on my families tan living-room couch. The mixed wood floorings caught my eyes, blinding me, as the sun showed through the window above the couch and onto the wood floor.

My cat stood completely over by the bannister making eye contact with me and brushing his body up against the wall just waiting to be seen by me, so he might waltz his fat Siamese body over to me and leap up on my lap. There he would leave a bunch of tedious white cat hairs all over my blue jeans and into the quiet air that filled the room. A tear broke complimentary from my eyelashes, it diminished my ivory colored cheek, trailed down my warm lips, and onto my purple blouse. A round area now replaced the landing of where the tear had fallen.

Just as more tears were breaking free from my eyelashes, lips, and down my cheeks, the sound of my dads green ford pulled into the driveway. I quickly gathered my lifeless limbs and muscles in my right arm together and brushed the sleeve of my purple blouse up and over my wet face. When my father came into the house looking rushed and worn from the hot day and acting flustered he walked over to the fridge and pulled out a soda and popped it open.

As I sat lifelessly on the couch staring at the glossy floor that blinded me, he put his soda down on the granite countertop in the kitchen. Did you see what I’ve done in the garage? ”, my father tried to say in a comforting voice, but it ended up sounding more so him looking for acceptance of his new arrangement. I moved my head towards his direction replying “No, I haven’t, what did you do? ”, with as much enthusiasm as my body and mind would project. “ C’mon out, lemme show you. ” The expression on his face by this time was over joyed and suspicious looking, it made me think he did something completely abrupt with the room out there.

Gathering all of my ligaments and muscles together, my body began to pull itself up from the couch. The dried tears made my face tight and my eyes burn. I walked over to put my grey “Toms” on, glanced through the glass on the French door, and saw my dad disappear into the garage. I slid my feet into my shoes and peered out the open front door slowly the cat had escaped out of, running as if he were a hostage. Closing the front house door behind me and waking towards the garage my worries of what my father did to the garage and having to hunt down the house cat overcame the sadness in my body.

Walking into the white door frame I noticed that the room was dark and didn’t have too much, if any, airflow besides a fan that sat on my dads wood shelf over in a corner that blew barely cool air. I came to a stop next to an open area, and from the corner of my eye I saw the reflection of a silver chain and I quickly moved back towards the door with the sunlight gleaming in. Hanging from this chain was a bright red bag that was swaying towards what would have been the top of my torso.

My father was punching this bag with fierce anger causing it to sway back and forth. Whenever you need to be angry just come in here and throw a few good punches at it! ”. Still standing in the warm sunlight by the door, I began to feel overwhelmed, I looked then looked into my fathers eyes. I saw how much he was in pain too and the stance he was in, he was angry and confused just like me too. I took one last look at my fathers face and took one at the blue sports car parked a few feet away from where my dad was standing. As more tears started to escape my eyes, I hurried my feet back outside and into the house where I wanted to be, yet again, content with the couch that made me feel content and lost in thought.
