In comparison to the articles that I viewed states that Information literacy is conceivably the foundation for learning in a contemporary environment of continuous technological change. To be information literate, a person must be able to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information. In an attempt to reduce information to easily manageable segments, most people have become dependent to others for their information. Everyday lack of timely and accurate information is costly to American businesses.

Americans have traditionally valued quality of life and the pursuit of happiness; however, these goals are increasingly difficult to achieve because of the complexities of life in today's information and technology dependent society. Problems are more difficult to solve when people lack access to meaningful information vital to good decision--making.

Libraries provide a significant public access point to such information and usually at no cost must play a key role in preparing people for the demand of today's information society.

Public libraries not only provide access to information but they also remain crucial to providing people with the knowledge necessary to make meaningful use of resources. Although libraries historically have provided a meaningful structure for relating information in ways that facilitate the development of knowledge, they have been all but ignored in the literature about the information society. An increased emphasis on information literacy and resource-based learning would manifest itself in a variety of ways at both the academic and school levels, depending upon the role and mission of the individual institution and the information environment of its community.

Students' would involve not only searching print, electronic, and video data, but also interviewing people inside and outside of school.

There would be more reading of original sources and more extended writing. Student and teachers would be familiar with the intellectual and emotional demands of asking productive questions, gathering data of all kinds, analyzing, interpreting and evaluating information in all forms. Librarians need to work with the faculty to ensure that students have opportunities to demonstrate what they have learned about finding and evaluating information. As well as requiring that information literacy be applied, there is ample evidence that information literacy must occur throughout a student's academic career. A study of effective information literacy strategies with undergraduate students concluded the information literacy skills "are best developed through regular exposure to assignments that are process oriented and that require critical thinking" (Quarton, 2003).

It is imperative that information literacy be integrated as student's progress through general education courses specific to their majors. For information literacy instruction to succeed, it must be integrated, relevant, ongoing, collaborative, and applied. A recent commentary in Portal concurred that "there is no one solution to the problem of how to help students improve their research skills, library skills, or information literacy skills. Academic librarians may need to use a combination of approaches and, above all, be persistent in their efforts to aid students' information literacy" (Thompson, 2003). Not only has there been a significant increase in the amount of information available, but the rate at which that information becomes obsolete has increased as well. The area of "expertise" in which the average person can expect to keep current has grown proportionally smaller.

The ability to sift through large amounts of information, and by making connections to prior knowledge, gain understanding, is a highly marketable skill. Those who know how to access and use information are likely to be more successful in competitive marketplace. As the importance of information literacy grows, so does the importance of the role of librarians as integral members of the teaching and learning mission of the college and university. There is a growing emphasis on teaching and learning as a component of the mission of twenty-first century libraries. At the same time, there is a growth in collaborative endeavors involving librarians and teaching faculty in efforts to reach larger numbers of students. Instead of relying on reference encounters in the library and formal library instruction, librarians are working to promote collaboration with faculty in an effort to integrate information literacy into the curriculum.
