“A Conversation with My Father” (Grace Paley) takes place throughout a scene. Were her dad being sick from a disorder and is dying. His daughter, the unidentified narrator, is paying him a visit. She is also an author, but her father has never quite appreciated her genre.

He thinks her stories are confusing, and on this visit, he asks her to “just write a straightforward story.” He cites his favorite writers, Henri Rene, Albert Guy de Maupassant and Chekhov, the speech they wrote concerning recognizable people, just writing down what happened to them next. She agrees to give it a try as a result of she needs to form her father to happy. However, internally she is not happy as a result, she does not like stories that follow a straightforward narrative from beginning to end.

She thinks they exclude the specified hope for one factor fully totally different to happen. She tells her father a tragic story of a mother and son. It is a few mother's international organizations, an agency that cherished her son just about, but the son bust her heart by turning into a junkie. Paley needs to let her father have the last word, thus she has just revised the story, to say that the woman’s son never returns home, but the lady eventually recovers from her addiction and gets employment as an assistant at a clinic for drug users. Her experience as a fan serving to help others. The papa has his doubts concerning the new ending, saying that 'Truth first. She will slide back. A person must have character. She does not.' (p. 71 Paley) He means she may probably slide back to her previous habits of addiction eventually. She says that it does not matter, the new ending is simply the tip. There is nothing once, and additionally the lady will just continue operating as an assistant and because of that, is the ending. She leaves, promising to travel with her father yet again. The papa wonders aloud but wonders how long the lady will last in her current job and if she goes to ever accept that life is inherently tragic.
