From having a series of problems, like coping with a sick father and unable to finish school, which was only because she was more interested in reading and writing. The lady disagrees, because, she says, the lady is simply a little older and can simply recover and save herself the strategy her son did. She may still have tons of life to live. Her father disagrees, accusing his lady of refusing to admit that her protagonist’s story is one in each of tragedy. He says, 'there is no hope, the end.'(p.71)

Paley needs to let her father have the last word, thus she has just revised the story, to say that the woman’s son never returns home, but the lady eventually recovers from her addiction and gets employment as an assistant at a clinic for drug users. Her experience as a fan serving to help others. The papa has his doubts concerning the new ending, saying that 'Truth first. She will slide back. A person must have character. She does not.' (p. 71 Paley) He means she may probably slide back to her previous habits of addiction eventually. She says that it does not matter, the new ending is simply the tip. There is nothing once, and additionally the lady will just continue operating as an assistant and because of that, is the ending. She leaves, promising to travel with her father yet again. The papa wonders aloud but wonders how long the lady will last in her current job and if she goes to ever accept that life is inherently tragic.
