Alan’s opening comments demonstrate how he feels about the performance review aspect of his job. He hates it. He feels awkward and inadequate to the task at hand. He needs to give out god, helpful, and productive evaluations of his employee’s performance, but has a block against doing so. Identify specific comments by Alan that show he is either effectively listening to his employees, or that he is not.Alan’s statement to Gretchen, “Ah, look, look, I don’t wants to lose you, but you’ve got to work more quickly”, shows that he is not listening to the statement that she just made.

Alan needed to address Andrews’ perception of the quality of his own work. Alan does make a statement to Andrews, “Look, I don’t want to get into your family issues. Can we just focus on the work for now…” I this case Alan is listening to Andrews”, but is not being in the least bit supportive. Alan could try “active listening”. The key to active listening is to repeat what is being said, include feelings in the response, and try not to filter what you hear.When Andrews’ talks about his family issues and son’s medical condition that took a lot of time away from his work schedule Alan could have repeat what Andrews said so that Andrew knows that Alan was leistering, and they both are on the same page with what was said.

Alan could then show his feelings about Andrews’ situation with either his words, or his tone. The words that Alan chooses to use just show his discomfort with talking about personal issues, they do not convey any type of concern for his employee, Andrews, or Andrews situation. Alan needs to try to put himself in Andrews’ predicament if only for a moment) and try to give him some supportive comments before commenting on absenteeism. Alan also needs to forces on the entirely of what Gretchen and Andrews are saying not just forces on the parts that obviously affect him. The issues surrounding Gretchen and Andrews’s performance need to be addressed, if their performance is to improve.

What suggestion would you give Alan about how to started interviews in ways thoseestablish a supportive environment for interaction?Alan needs to be mindful of the situation and problems his employees may have so that he can better understands their perspective. He could also come at the conversation a little bit lighter, so that the meeting does not start off with both of them being confrontational and defensive. Asking an employee or colleague about their weekend, family, hobby, etc. might relax them a bit so that they do not feel attacked as soon as they walk into the office. It is also very important to not appear judgmental when responding.
