Why should we do this unit Essay

What does striving for excellence mean? In practical terms, it means seeking continual improvement in everything we do. We never actually achieve perfection. Products, processes, attitudes, beliefs and all possible aspects of life can always be improved upon. Consider this – what if the automobile, electric bulb, or telephone had been declared perfect even 10 or 20 years ago? These products are continually being improved upon. The original inventors are gone, but others are still striving for excellence with these items. Striving for excellence is the key to living a super-charged life. If you want to get the most out of life in every way, then you have to put the most into it. If you sow excellence in everything you do, you will reap excellent rewards. Today, the young generation is surrounded with gadgets and services to make their lives comfortable to the extent of lulling them into complacent acceptance of everything that comes their way.

However, this unit is a wakeup call for those who believe that life is all about home delivered ready to eat food and that success comes overnight without much effort. It is an attempt to bring to the fore the grime and struggle that goes into the making of a hero… an attempt to inspire each one of us to strive for excellence… In this unit, the learners will come across people who have fought against adverse circumstances and emerged as winners through sheer hard work and persistence. It is said that the quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to his commitment to excellence, regardless of his chosen field of endeavor. Great Confucius once said, “The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential… these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.” This unit is an endeavor to initiate the learners into that very quest for excellence.

General Learning Outcomes of Unit I

At the end of this unit the students will

•be able to identify their lives with the struggles, trials and tribulations of the people who have made it big through constant and tireless striving. • analyse their own goals and determine if their efforts are leading towards the achievement of their aims. •realise that striving for excellence is a constant motivating force that can work wonders if coupled with grit, determination and hard work. •have a broad understanding of how to appreciate what others have excelled in.

Specific Learning Outcomes

At the end of this unit the students will:

•have gained an understanding of how to appreciate a short story, poem/ song.

•have enhanced their vocabulary.

•have become familiar with the elements of a biography.

•have improved their listening comprehension skills.

•be able to express themselves in the form of a speech.

•be able to make notes on the basis of a given passage and write a summary of the notes.

•be able to write newspaper reports.

•be able to polish their interview skills, both in speech and writing.

•be able to list the traits of achievers.

•be able to express their idea of excellence in life.
