World War I was a major event of deaths, disasters, causes and effects on the European countries. World War I was a war against three European countries England, France, and Russian versus Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary. Friedrich Engels explains in The Origins of the First World War (Doc A) the aftermath of the Thirty Years War caused many devastating effects like famine, sickness, want and brutalizing the population and this is being compared to World War I saying that the same outcome happened in three or four years instead of thirty.
World War I was caused by different factors nationalism is one of the major causes, the fight over colonies, and the expenditure on the armies to cause such a massive war. The Franco-Russian Military Convention (Doc E) explains that France and Russian will work together to help each other when either are attack by the enemy. This document is helpful, but it does not follow the 3 that are being explained. These factors alone could have caused the war itself but there are still many others to be explained another time.
Nationalism was the one major and true factor of the war, nothing could come close to how major this played in World War I. Beginning with Emile Zola in The Origins of the First World War (Doc B) a country had to have a strong army in order for the country to live. Even states once a country loses its army then the country will die out (Doc B). Continued on by A French Citizen, Bertrand, and Kaiser Wilhelm II in The Origins of the First World War and The Guns of August (Doc C) many people supported nationalism and wanted war to happen by having shouts in public to help promote the reasons.
John T. McCutcheon draws a picture (Doc G) showing how every country as people had a way to “point the finger at” each other country mainly Germany being the main victim against four others. A newspaper by Colonel Dragutin Dimitrevic using The Origins of the First World War (Doc I) Serbia is saying that the only way for Serbia to live with honors is to have a war with Austria. James Joll author of The Origins of the First World War (Doc L) writes that Germany is trying to expand and spread its power through Europe. Prince A. V.
Lvov writes the Russian National Anthem and James Thomson writes a poem (Doc H) explain in Russian the people are cheering on their Tsar to live with power and in Britain the people refuse to surrender and become slaves to anyone and Britain shall stay ruling. From Annika Mombauer in The Origins of the First World War (Doc M) Kaiser Wilhelm II will gives a speech to encourage the people of Austria to join them and to face against England while General Von Moltke says that war is unavoidable and is the answer and wants to make the war to Russian more popular.
Also on the map (doc D) the alliance of the countries shows that each country was ready and standing by each other’s back to start the war in 1914. The fight over colonies was a major factor for Germany to start a war against England and France. A German Propaganda cartoon (Doc O) shows us that England is the largest consumer of the entire world’s resources from other countries being called the “Bloodsucker of the World. ” On a map and from Colin Nicolson in The First World War (Doc P) it shows that England had the most colonies around the world with 400 million people in the colonies, about 8 times as much as France.
While England had the most Germany had the 3rd most with about 12 million in the colonies (Doc P). Norman Rich in The Age of Nationalism and Reform (Doc Q) states the colonies are the sources for raw materials for war itself, so the more colonies you owned the more raw material you would be able to have. Expenditure is a smaller factor in World War I, but is still a big factor because countries have spent tons and tons of cash on preparing for war and to see their country prosper because you have to have an army to prosper (Doc B).
James Joll explains is The Origins of the First World War (Doc F) in the Franco-Russian Treaty (Doc E) France has spent over a fourth of its foreign investments on Russian alone to help Russia’s economy. From The London Times History of the World (Doc K) all of the 6 countries have spent well over millions and millions on their armies and navy to prepare them for war. Starting from 1890 building to the start of the war in 1914(Doc K).
A picture from Reynold’s Newspaper (Doc N) shows that more countries have spent their money on war than anything else. World War I was started from many factors, but nationalism, fight over colonies and expenditures on the war are the three that built up the most for the war to start up and ignite the flames. A missing document that would be helpful is a document that shows colonies in the Americas and their routes to help explain how England and France were able to settle there while Germany was behind and wasn’t able to settle there.
