James Tworkowski is the founder of TWOLHA, an organization that supports people suffering from depression, drug addiction and other mood disorders. To write love on her arms is an inspirational movement that began with a blog and a story. James had a friend named Renee who was a nineteen year old drug addict who suffered from major depression. She had previous issues with sexual abuse as a child and inflicted harm on herself as a coping mechanism along with the drugs. Her arms were covered in scars and she even carved the phrase “FUCK UP” in her arms.
After being rejected from rehab, James gathered a support group and prayed for her. They helped her move forward, move past the years of pain and addiction. They saved her life with help, support and the spirit of god. “We become her hospital and the possibility of healing fills our living room with life. It is unspoken and there are only a few of us, but we will be her church, the body of Christ coming alive to meet her needs, to write love on her arms” (Tworkowski). James is the most committed, determined and brave leader of a non-profit organization.
Saving Renee was an event that triggered James to start TWLOHA. He was completely dedicated to present hope and find help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. He began this organization in 2006, struggling to make it off the ground. He sacrificed many things to accomplish his goals. As of 2011, the TWLOHA organization has raised over $850,000, which a large portion is used to bridge the gap between mentally ill people and the treatment they need. Without James’s dedication, mentally ill people that want to seek help in the form of a support group would go unheard.
TWLOHA is a very determined organization, with their innovative ideas and strong work ethic they have partially achieved their goal. An innovative idea that connects many people globally is the internet; James utilized this tool to spread the message of love by blogging. They are effectively spreading their message of love and understanding in a way that many people can relate. People are reaching out towards each other asking for help and others are there to listen, support and encourage.
Two out of three people that struggle with depression never seek help (Espero). The people who seek help on the website are strong people, who hope to change their futures and avoid their death. James’s dedication has moved his organization from the bottom to the top of the food chain in helping others. Globally, there is a suicide every forty seconds and in the United States a suicide occurs every 13. 7 seconds (Ashraf). James describes suicide as “complex; it involves psychological, social, biological, cultural, and environmental factors.
People who are suicidal may talk a lot about death, withdraw from friends, give away prized possessions, become more reckless and impulsive or express hopelessness. Suicide is preventable; talking about it does not cause someone to become suicidal, but rather, could actually save their life” (Tworkowski). Suicide is the third leading death in people between age fifteen and twenty four. By broadening the methods of communication, TWLOHA have begun to pave the way to a brighter future; proving itself as a strong organization. James Tworkski is the human embodiment of bravery.
He puts his life on the line to help these people. He never knows what he is getting himself into until he jumps in their life to make a change. He faces many dangers, such as being killed or robbed whenever he makes the attempt to connect with a person he met on the internet. People can disguise themselves, by writing a sob story to draw his attention for malicious reason. Yet, he strives forward on to help the next soul that crosses his path. His bravery establishes his as a prominent leader. Many people in this world are alone and scared. They walk a fine line between life and death, much of which stems from depression.
James Tworkski, the founder of the non-profit organization To Write Love on Her Arms is an extraordinary person. His dedication, bravery and determination are helping to curve the increasing growth of suicide and drug addiction. His message is spread in love and support. He helps to educate our society about the stigmas of mental illness, and tries to bring a better understanding to our simple minded generation. Without his determination, dedication and bravery, the TWLOHA foundation would not be able to save the thousands of lives it now does daily.
