Bangladesh is a densely populated country. Like other countries in the world, Bangladesh has also been experiencing in-tense traffic problem which is increasing day by day. It is becoming one of the most intolerable and burning issues for the country. Traffic congestion is a common occurrence almost in all the cities of Bangladesh. Among the major urban cities like Dhaka , Chittagong, Khulna and Rajshahi especially the Dhaka city is now facing serious traffic problem along with many other problems like sewage , electricity etc. Due traffic jam many problems are faced by the citizen of the country. The consumption of fuel has increased as people have to sit idle in their cars during the congestion. People have to wait hours in the congestion so their time is wasted. Moreover, this congestion is also responsible for polluting the environment. We know the effects of traffic but we should also know the causes behind it, in order to solve it. Firstly, Bangladesh does not have a strict traffic control systems. Due to that much congestion occurs in different areas. Moreover there is absence of adequate public transport, faulty signalling equipment and poor enforcement of traffic rules. If traffic rules are instructed clearly and strict measures are taken when rules are broken, many people will have an intensive to follow rules and regulation of traffic.

As the city is running with inadequate amount of traffic police than required, so it is almost must for the authority to increase the number of traffic police. Only recruitment is not enough, they should be trained up for the betterment of the traffic management. Secondly, the numbers of vehicles are increasing day by day. As population have been increasing, the numbers of vehicles on the roads are also increasing at an increasing rate. In Bangladesh, population and traffic growth rate is increasing but roads expanding rate is not at all unmentionable with respect to higher traffic growth. Due to the higher purchasing power of the citizen of Bangladesh the popularity of private transportation is increasing and but existing roads and highway are not supportive or changing according to the increasing number of vehicle. As a result vehicle congestion is increasing at an alarming rate. Thirdly, the condition of road infrastructure is very poor. The condition of roads are either poor or they are very narrow so less vehicle can move through it at a time. Roads of the city are narrow in different places; there are several reasons like Hawkers on the footpath and some portion of the road and illegal possession on the road or illegal structures. This kind of unlawful activity has to be prevented by imposing proper law and city development plan. Another fact is there are fewer roads compared to the number of vehicles.

Traffic congestion is a global as well as local problem. All over the world, the prime cause of traffic congestion is on street parking. In Bangladesh, traffic congestion is a common issue in the big cities like Dhaka, Chittagong and Khulna and in Dhaka it is severe. It is one of the most important problems of modern time. In Dhaka, different infrastructural and managerial projects are granted for reducing traffic jam. Traffic congestion constraints can be reduced by embarking on various strategies such as road capacity expansion, improved road infrastructures, restricting routes for Rickshaw, financial penalty to the traffic rule breakers, building bus stoppages and application of fly over. Most importantly, proper traffic management system along with appropriate implementation of traffic rules is necessary to reduce the problem of traffic jam.
