1.1 Explain the difference between a working relationship and a personal relationship.
A working relationship is where you are working with other people and you are working as part of a team where each person in the team is working towards the same aims and objectives. Mutual respect and understanding is needed for a good working relationship, not every body may get on in the work place, but personal feelings and opinions should be kept to yourself and at work always be professional and civil to work colleagues.
A personal relationship is a relationship that is formed because you like a person and you choose to have a personal relationship with them. This could be because you may have the same interest or hobbies as them or just get on well with them and enjoy there company. There are different personal relationships like partners, siblings, children and grandchildren and
1.2 Describe the different working relationships you might find within health and social care settings.
There are several different working relationships in the health and social care setting. These could be work colleagues, your manager, other professionals like home care, meals on wheels, the service users themselves and there families. For all of these you would have a different type of working relationship. Professionals would be more formal, but you must always talk and act professionally at all times with every person.
2.1 Explain the importance of adhering to the agreed scope of your job role.
It is important to adhere to your job role as in your job description because a service user could ask you to do something for them that could put yourself or them at risk which could cause one or both of you to get injured. You should never do something eg like hoisting someone unless you have been trained to do so. If you were to visit them outside of work to help them out this would not be acceptable as this is over stepping your professional boundaries, as it is not in our job description. If one care worker were to do things for a service user and another care worker would not this would confuse the service user and they would think that the care worker that said no was not doing there job and this could cause conflict.
2.2 Where can you access full and up-to-date agreed ways of working?
Council have policies and procedures for all staffs different places of work. These give all information needed about how staff should carry out there duties in the correct way. Our job description will dictate what duties we are responsible for and can be obtained from HR and health safety.
3.1, 3.2 Explain the importance of working in partnership with others and how you can achieve this.
All care workers need to be working together so that continuity of care is provided for the service user, good teamwork and good communication is essential. All care workers involved with a service user must be aware of what care is needed for that person and know and understand in order to co-ordinate care efficiently. This can be done by liaising with all parties involved in providing care for the individual, eg the service users themselves this will encourage and support them to be involved in their own care, helping them maintain their skills etc. social worker, family, home care agency, meals on wheels, district nurses, GP. There is no point in a GP stating dressing needs to be changed daily and district nurses go in weekly, or the district nurses go for visit at home and the person is not there because on the day they visit they are at day care.
A person may have meals on wheels every day, but then gets a place within day care for 2 days per week, meals on wheels would then need to be informed that meals will not be needed on those days, also when day care is closed for bank holidays meals on wheels would be put back in place for those days, or if home care calls are normally supplied, those would be put in place, this also happens if a person does not attend day care if unwell. All these things need to be sorted out before a person attends the centre, and as much information retained as possible regarding there care. Each day we have an end of day discussion so that any concerns we may have had during the course of the day can be discussed, and if any changes need to be put in place for any individual service users.
3.3 List the skills and approaches you need to resolve conflicts.
In day care we do have conflicts between service users, this could be due to communication if someone has not heard correctly or miss understood due to either, hearing loss or dementia. To resolve any conflicts between service users I would take them to a quiet location in the office if possible or the corner of the hall, I would then discuss with them the problem between them and look for a compromise, whilst keeping the situation calm and listening to both sides. I would not agree with either of them I would neutral, if I could not keep the situation under control, I would ask for help from my line manager or colleagues.
We have had conflicts/issues with service users family when a service user was unable to stand and needed to be hoisted, and the family did not agree and said that there mum just needed a little lift from care staff. In the case you must always stay professional and explain that care staff are not permitted to do this as it could hurt there mum as well as the care worker and could be classed as abuse. The family would be advised not to do this themselves and that for the best interest and welfare of the service user and the family that an Occupational Health visit would be appropriate. If the family would not agree to this & for there mum to be hoisted in the day care centre, then we would have no alternative but to cancel there place and inform the commissioning team at Council.
3.4 Where can you access advice and support regarding ‘partnership working’ and resolving conflicts?
Advice & support regarding partnership working can be found through the social services, if the indivdual has an active social worker, if not Duty officer & the commissioning team who are the team that arranges day care for an individual. Day Care is only given a need to know basis information. Other information may be found on IAS. Conflicts can some times be difficult to come to a resolution, and you need to get to the underlying problem especially if it is between staff, they must come to a compromise if to continue working together.
If I needed further advice & support, I would then contact my line manager & other colleagues, HR or the union if necessary. If it was conflict between service users I would contact the families and talk to them regarding the problem, if no family to contact then I would telephone the social worker or duty officer, make a report and log in service users ISP (individual support plan) and log a brief description in main log book, and discuss with other care workers at the end of day discussion that we have regarding any concerns we may have had during the course of the day.
