The New England Patriots were leaders in offense and fourth in defense (National Football League, 2008) for the 2007 season. They had the greatest number of yards per game with an average of 411. 2 yards per game. The Patriots defense allowed 288. 3 yards per game but the Pittsburgh Steelers allowed 266. 4 yards per game against them but only won 10 games as opposed to the Patriots 16 (the Patriots did not lose a single game during the regular season). The correlation coefficient between the number of wins and the yards per game was a fraction above .
75 whereas the correlation between the yards allowed by defense and number of wins was -. 54 showing that prowess in defense does not necessarily increase the number of wins a team had, at least for the 2007 season. There is a stronger correlation coefficient between the total points (PF) a team scored with the number of wins. The correlation coefficient for PF and Wins is . 87.
The correlation coefficient for points scored against a team and the number of wins is -. 72, and strong indicator that good defense does not mean a good team. The points scored and yards gained indicator show a good correlation with the number of wins. The yards allowed and the points allowed show fairly bad correlation with the number of games won. However the best correlation coefficient for the number of wins is the net score or the number of points scored by a team less the number of points allowed by a team. The correlation coefficient for net points during the 2007 NFL season was 0. 94.
All other correlations were weaker than the net score correlation, and that corresponds to conventional thinking. Net aggregate scores when high show dominance by a team, and when low or negative, show a team that has more points scored against it than scored by them. Teams do not win a lot of games when their opponents score more than they do. 1 Bibliography National Football League. (2008). http://www. nfl. com/stats/categorystats.
