In the world of business there are many essential parts to a successful operation. Some may say that marketing, production and/or sales are the most important part of any business, but after studying the process of operation management, it is found to be the backbone of any business process. Operation management embodies all aspects of the business process and unites them to create an efficient resourceful procedure.
The first step to a successful operation is to develop a detailed business plan. This plan should include all aspects of the business including the operation plan. The operation part of the plan for small business processes from raw materials purchase and handling, to package and shipping. Though operations plan can and probably will change throughout the life of a business, it is the one process that can not cut from any business.
Why employ OM? Though a relatively new field of research and still evolving, many businesses employ it as a way to increase productivity and reduce error. OM allows companies to be more competitive by reducing unnecessary cost involved when resources are squandered.
Who can be credited with the introduction of OM? No one person can be credited with this process. After all, throughout the evolution of man, through the centuries man has always found ways of becoming more efficient. The nature of the human being is to essentially be lazy. Therefore the human being is constantly finding new ways to get more for less. This means more increase in productivity, or output/input. This has lead to the world today.
The world now is that lead by increase in productivity. The strive for this increase has fueled innovation. The steam engine was replaced with the gas engine. The horse and carriage were replaced by the horseless carriage, and the typewriter with the personal computer. Why is this important? All of these accomplishments represent the natural human instinct to become more efficient.
All of these accomplishments are applied to OM in the sense that they have all made life more efficient. OM allows business to operate more efficiently. Operation management is the integration of all aspects of the business process. It was once said:
All parts of the system must be constructed with reference to all other parts, since in one sense, all parts form one machine. Like any other machine the failure of one part to cooperate properly with the other parts, disorganizes the whole and renders it inoperative for the purpose intended.
This is the essential explanation of Operation management. If all parts of a business do not co-exist in a synchronized method then any progress made by any separate part are nullified by the inconstant or unsynchronized progress of another.
After the organization of a business has occurred, the next step is to further explore the company’s mission. The Operation strategy should represent that of the company’s mission, and successfully follow that of. The goal of every business is to make money or produce a profit, and there are several critical points to each business that a manager must identify. Once identified, each of these points must be considered toward the future of the company.
There are many other part business that operation managers must observe and take heed. Operation managers must have the ability to schedule and plan projects according to the time and demands. These are tasks essential to the activities of business. If said manager does not properly schedule things such as worker projects, raw materials purchase and such trade offs, the quality or integrity of the business may compromised. If this happens then business will be lost the occurrence of negative word-of-mouth advertising, which is fatal to established as well as growing businesses.
The next objective of Operation Management is to manage quality. The book shows a company profile of Motorola, one of the leaders in the technology industry. The use of their six sigma program has allowed them to create a competitive advantage through the reduction of errors in the production process. This program not only performs the process of managing quality through the reduction of defective parts, but it creates an advantage with the customer who need not worry about the purchase of a defective product.
How does an Operation Manager go about managing quality? They can do this through proper training of employees, use of quality materials and effective planning. This may seem like a lot, but every part is essential to the production of the final good. Also there are many solutions and advancement that allow the operation manager to conduct duties and link all parts of the business process. Such solutions include computer and IP solutions. When implemented it is easier for the monitoring of all operations. When all is executed properly, each project is a success. This is done through the intense monitoring of all processes involved in the production of the final finished good.
Operation management involves many intricate parts that all businesses must possess. Although businesses have existed long before the field of operation management, in the ever growing competitive world of today’s business it grows ever more important for businesses to be on the cutting edge of efficiency and productivity. The use of operation management makes this possible. There are many reasons for the use of the operation manager, and this job is growing ever more concrete. This is why in the future, where ever physical and fiscal business is conducted, Operation management will be an intricate part.
