Here in Russia we consider that the slogan “Go green!” is one of the most important mottos for many western companies. Nowadays it is getting really trendy to do green business and to follow the rule “Think globally, act locally”. And actually I want to believe that it is not a cheap marketing move to attract more and more customers but these companies really work this way. I absolutely do not want to find out in one fine day that all sustainable manufacturers are frauds and they deceive us only to get excellent reputation and to enjoy surplus. On the contrary, I would really like to be sure that all the companies and manufacturers do not pollute our environment with harmful waste and smoke, do not test their products on defenseless animals. Lamentable as it is, but we live in the very cruel world among people who pollute the atmosphere, water and ground, extirpate flora and fauna, not caring about their future, about their offsprings’ life. I am certain that companies must adopt such practices like reducing and recycling their energy, must introduce new technologies, not doing tests on cats and rabbits and other animals.
On this essay I would like to write in the first paragraph about all the possible steps to do any business ecofriendly, in the second one I am going to examine all the positive and negative effects of doing green businesses, and in the last paragraph I would like to enumerate famous green and non-green companies and take a look at their strategies. In the first place let’s have a look at the possible steps to do any business green. In Europe and the USA many business owners do all the possible to make their manufacturing greener. Firstly, all the companies should reduce their paper use. It will save many trees, if office workers print both sides of a sheet. After all we live in the century of digital technologies, and it is about time to use more actively not paper but digital media. There is no need to use disposable paper cups and plastic plates, when it is more efficient and ecofriendly to use reusable products.
Plastic bags must be banned to produce, I am strongly assured that they really harm our planet. Instead of them every person should have his/her own reusable rag bag for products. Secondly, I believe it would be great for our Mother Earth, if factories and plants used alternative energy in their manufacturing, as for example, wind and solar energy instead of atomic power, and vegetable oils or alcohols in place of fossil fuels. Thirdly, I assume employers should encourage their employees to use alternative vehicles. Both employers and employees could ride bikes, hybrid cars or take public transportation to reach their workplace. Also the number of cars on the road can be reduced if more people carpool to their work, as it they do it in Singapore. Finally, I reckon there should be heavy penalties imposed on workers who do not act ecofriendly: leave the lights on, use water supply unrationally, litter in and out of offices and so on.
What is more I assume that on the one side authorities could support with funds companies, plants and fabrics to introduce methods and technologies friendly to the environment into their industry and work process. And on the other side all the companies violating ecological principles, for example polluting ponds and rivers, the air and the soil, cutting down trees, testing their goods on animals must be heavily fined or even put into a jail. In the second place I would like to write about positive and negative consequences of doing a green business. On the one hand there are heaps of benefits for manufacturers in doing their business ecofriendly. Firstly, I have an opinion that in general all people should understand that it is for their own good to treat our precious planet with love and respect. I consider that the healthy environment is the main benefit for manufacturers, they should do their business green in order not to live in the world unsuitable for life.
So you see that fresh air, clean water, green trees and blooming meadows are the main advantage of doing sustainable business. However contemporary manufacturers, especially in Russia, have a long way to go before they understands all the fragility of our nature, and before they starts live not for the day to earn profits. Secondly, green manufacturing and work process improve the public image of any company. No doubts that customers will be pleased to know that their favorite manufacturer, for instance any cosmetics company, does not pollute the environment, use only harmless organic ingredients and recyclable packages, does not test their products on animals. Thirdly, basic green actions such as to switch off lights and water will help not only manufacturers but all the people to save money on bills.
On the other hand there are also some disadvantages in green business. First of all it can be quite expensive for a company to become greener: to use solar power they need expensive solar panels, need to pay through the nose for up-to-date machines to test their products on, and after all it is much easier and cheaper for them to get rid of industrial waste than to recycle it. Secondly, many companies are not going to become green, as they understand that their finished products will be more expensive, if they are natural. And in this case they will be not in demand among particular sections of society. All these negative sides are really significant, but nevertheless I am strongly assured that it is possible to overcome them. The government and local authorities could partly give incentives to entrepreneurs to do their entrepreneurial activity greener. At last I would like to write about the most outstanding green and non-green companies.
Of course you should take into account that many companies just may pretend to be ecofriendly, but nonetheless for the present day they are regarded to be green. Among them are car manufacturers Toyota with its hybrid Prius and Honda, one of the most fuel-efficient companies in the world. Restaurants Starbucks and McDonalds are also among green companies. Both of them produce their paper cups and bags from recycled paper. In the list of green enterprises are also such computing companies like IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Dell and General Electric. These companies try to use only recyclable materials by producing their computers and to reduce their energy consumption. There are also good cosmetics which we love and buy. Among them are The Body Shop, Yves Rocher, Sephora, MAC, Aveda (by the way Angelina Jolies’ favorite cosmetics) and some other else.
They use natural ingredients, recyclable and refillable packaging, and what is really important for me they do not do tests on animals. Now it is a time to write about non green products. Apple electronics and X Box gadgets are among such products. They are made out of plastics and toxic materials that are hazardous to the environment. Procter&Gamble products, Gillette Co., L’OREAL, Henkel, Kimberley-Clark, Unilever test their cosmetics on animals.
To summarize all I have written above I want to notice that it is really about time to start worrying about the Mother Earth. Not only enterprises but all of us should go green if we want our descendants to live in the world. What is more it is quite difficult to say whether our planet is able to endure our presence anymore. It seems to me that present climatic anomalies indicate the opposite. And I want to end my work with Paul McCartney’s words: “Out of all those millions and millions of planets floating around there in space, this is our planet, this is our little one, so we just got to be aware of it and take care of it”.
