In both the “The Tell Tale Heart”, and”The Black Cat”, the stories end with a death of a person. Some events in the murder are similar and different. In this paragraph, I will talk about the story, “The Tell Tale Heart”. In the beginning of the story, the narrator wants to kill an old man, who lives with him, because of his vulture eye. He decides that he will watch the old man at night and shine a light on his vulture eye. If he sees the eye he will kill the old man. In the first seven days, he does not see the vulture eye. But on the 8th night he makes a slight noise and wakes the old man up. After a little while he charges into the room, which then the old man screams, and the narrator kills the old man by throwing the bed on top of him. He then realizes that the yell may have attracted a neighbor to wake up and contact the authorities. So he cuts the body into pieces in his bath tub, and hides the pieces of the body underneath his living room floor boards.
The police come after a little while suspecting foul play but find nothing. When they sit down to talk to the narrator in the living room, the narrator hears a beating of a heart. He suspects its of the old man. And in an insane fit, he confesses the crime to the police. In this paragraph, I will talk about the story, “The Black Cat”. In the beginning of the story it shows how the narrator was a very happy child and that he loved animals very much. He married early and got a cat named ‘Pluto’. After a while he turned into an alcoholic, which made him maltreat his wife, and pets, except he restrained himself of mistreating Pluto his cat. One day he came home intoxicated. He noticed that Pluto was avoiding him. He seized the cat, and in response, Pluto gave him a slight wound with his teeth. Then the narrator cut out one of Pluto’s eyeballs. After that incident Pluto avoided the narrator even more. Then one morning, with tears in his eyes, he put a noose around Pluto’s neck and hung him in a nearby tree near his house. On the night of the murder of Pluto, he woke to a blaze of fire.
When he, his wife and a servant escaped from the house, all of his worldly possessions burned in front of his very own eyes. The following day, he visited the ruins and saw that one wall did not cave in. On the wall, he saw a great imprint of a gigantic cat with a rope around its neck. This brought the narrator to believe that during the fire, someone threw the cat inside one of the houses windows when the house was on fire. Since the cellar was made of concrete, it was not destroyed and they decided to live there. After some time, they find another cat with a splotch of white on his chest. They decide to adopt him and bring him home.
This cat followed the narrator everywhere and everywhere. This eventually angered the narrator again. When he was in the cellar with his wife the cat made him trip and he was about to kill the cat with a fatal blow with an axe, until his wife stepped in the middle and the axe slammed into her skull, oozing of blood and killing her instantly. He decides to put her body in one of the walls of the cellar, like the monks of the middle ages did. For the next three days he does not see the cat. So he ends up thinking that he is finally a free man. When the police arrive on the 4th day, they check all the nooks and crannies in the room, and they do not see any evidence of a murder. When they are about to leave though, the narrator starts to brag about how well his house is constructed. When he taps the part of the wall where his wife was buried, there was a loud shriek, which was the cat, who he tombed up in the wall by accident.
In this paragraph, I will talk about three similarities in the stories, “The Tell Tale Heart”, and”The Black Cat”. The first similar event in both stories was when after the murder, both narrators hid the dead bodies in their house. Another similarity I noted was how police came to check up on both narrators after they had committed the murder. Another similarity I read is how both narrators show arrogance once the police come to their houses. In the story, “The Tell Tale Heart”, the narrator goes inside the old man’s chamber and puts his chair right on top of where he buried the old man in the floor boards. In “The Black Cat”, the narrator starts showing arrogance by showing the police how his house is well constructed. He then hits his cane on the part of the concrete wall where he put his dead wife.
In this paragraph, I will talk about two differences in the stories, “The Tell Tale Heart”, and “The Black Cat”. The first difference is how they murder the person. In “The Tell Tale Heart”, the narrator killed the old man by throwing the bed on top of him, and further chopping up his body into bits in his tub. But in “The Black Cat”, the narrator first kills the cat by hanging him, and then kills his wife with an axe, because she got in the way. Another difference in both stories was where they put the dead body after they murdered it. In “The Tell Tale Heart”, the narrator hid the body under the floorboards of his house. But in “The Black Cat”, he hides it inside one of his cellar walls. In both the “The Tell Tale Heart”, and”The Black Cat”, the stories end with a death of a person. As you can see, they both have a couple of differences and similarities.
