Government subsidies are vital sources for university education. There is a popular cognition all over the world that the more the states government pay for their higher education the better academic level the universities will be. Although, the cost of university education has increased in last decades (CollegeBoard Advocacy & Policy Center 2010). The benefits of range over various aspects from economy to culture, policy to diary life, ecology to energy, etc. That is to say government should be responsible for paying tertiary education because it is a basic element for the society.
This essay will mainly focus on not only the private but also the public which can be benefited from the government funding in higher education. In addition, it will identify several proposals to make sure this money is worthwhile. Firstly, funding is a government contribution to help university impart better education without aggravating students’ burden. Indeed, neither the universities would worry about whether they have sufficient budget to improve teaching and researching quality nor the students may be afraid of the inability to afford the enrollment fee if the government shoulder all university course fees.
From the universities’ perspective, government funding allows them to select the quality of their teaching and researching initiatively when are confronted with university funding budget constraint (Beath, Poyago-Theotoky and Ulph 2012). Furthermore, there is no doubt that the upgrading of campus facilities may lead to a dramatically increase in tuition fees in order to establish a better education environment. Thus, Dr. Compo (2012) insists that the students may face with significant economic pressure to make both ends meet.
Fortunately, government funding is an appropriate solution to release students from financial contraction. Further, government funding broadens the access to university. Government subsidy means low or even free charge of university courses. According to Sloan (2010) it is really an opportunity for students who come from impoverished families which cannot support their expenditures of several years’ life in campus. In fact, it is also an opportunity for university to choose students based on their academic ability not payment force.
Under this situation, it can promote the academic performance of the university as a whole due to the higher quality of students. The journal edited by Karabel and Astin (2013) claims that the academic ability of students who attend in university has a positive correlation with the quality of university. Therefore, government funding university may have more motivations to pick out potential talented youths. These young people will be easy to adapt to university life and academic activities without special training.
Overall, it is an ideal boon for university to attract more students at the same time to enhance academic circumstance in campus. What is going on is that government funding in higher education is an investment for future. It is a business both for private and the whole society. To be more particular, Badat (2010) states “The graduates of universities contribute in various ways to the public good – as teachers, health professionals, engineers, public servants and the like. ” They may enjoy a better living standard than those never attend colleges.
In return, they will pay more taxes to the government as a consequence of higher salaries. Moreover, government funding will contribute to country’s economic boost in not far future. As Howitt (2013) point out, “Technological and scientific research are crucial to long-term economic growth”. The reason to this is that, most university’s researches will promote economic benefits of industry and other core sectors, in everything from information technology to new energy resource, from advanced transportation vehicle to business trade and so on.
The flourish of economy will also lead to continuous growth in tax that is why higher education funding is a future investment. In conclusion, it is government’s duty to pay for the higher education course. That means higher education is not an issue only in individuals or universities, it is a national project of the whole country. In spite of paying for the course, both the university managers and the government policymakers need to consider effective methods to create a better study circumstance for students.
For example, the government or universities could use the funds to set up a scholarship mechanism to encourage gifted students. Also, application and examine model can be implemented to ensure the money is going to where it is needed. In brief, government funding comes from public taxes, it cannot be abused.
