There are different definitions of health and it can be viewed in a number of ways.
Negative definitions of health
This is when people decide if they are ill or not by the things that may influence them to think so. Negative definitions of health are basically when you use a negative tone to tell what side of health you consider yourself in this case a negative health, example ‘I have a hard time breathing therefore I am very ill’ Positive definitions of health
This would be the opposite of a negative definition of health therefore we would use positive terms to indicate whether or not we are ill, for example ‘I am breathing fine so I am well’
World health organization
There definition of health is that being well is not jus the absence of disease or infirmity but having a good state of mental, physical and social well being. This means that being health means to have a physical level for you age and weight and you are socially ok and not stressed.
Holistic definition of health
The holistic definition of health is that being healthy is much more than being in a good state of physical health but also being able to love, create, embrace and have a spiritual mind. They involve 6 types of dimensions which are; emotional, occupational, spiritual, social, physical and intellectual.
Functional definition of health
This is when you think you can do what normally are able to do then you think your healthy but if you suddenly cant do something u can usually then you consider yourself unhealthy. Also some people may not refer to the doctor for some thing they may feel is only a little thing but the rich would go the doctors regularly. A reason for this may be because the working class have keep working and feel they have no time to see a doctor are they don’t need to.
The bio medical model (Doctors, scientists etc) looks at health in a very simple and basic way. It says that being healthy means you have no disease. They say that if you do have a disease then this means you are unhealthy. This would then mean that other factors of illness would be ignored for example the holistic approach spiritual, emotional or intellectual.
Marxists believe that those with more wealth and power have a better health as they have the money. They can use a private doctor which would be at there service as soon as they needed it rather then having to wait for an appointment when you are ill. Also people with more money and live in a higher class society would have better housing and facilities rather than the working class or poor class who may not have such good living facilities for example rats or damps which leads to asthma or diseases. The richer also have a stress free life living in luxury while working class have to work for a living and have to deal with stressful things which could lead to depression but cant afford help. The environment would be different as the rich would live in posh clean areas but others may live in polluted city’s or work in bad conditions. Also the higher class may take pride in their health and so take good care of themselves but others may feel it is unnecessary as they have know time or money for good quality health care products.
Feminist’s believe that men have better health as they are given better treatment and are taken more seriously. Most women work in this day and age compared to the years of 1800 where women were not aloud to work and had no right. But even though both men and women work, women are still expected to be part time house wife and to cook and clean. In this case women go through more stress and so are more emotionally effected as men as they have periods and get pregnant but the doctors would not take this as serious as they still feel nothing is wrong with them biologically.
Also women are controlled with the contraception pill and are dominated to take it even though there is a male contraception pill. Also the condom doesn’t cause health related risk unlike the contraception pill. Also men are taken more seriously by the doctors and this was explored by the New England research project in the USA. They basically got 200 women and men to go and act of having heart attack symptoms to their local doctors. Most of the men were referred to examinations and specialists whereas the women were told they could be suffering from emotional stress or psychological problems maybe to do with the menopause. This resulted to show that not always are all women’s health looked at as equally as men as doctors may feel that men’s physiological problems can’t be as worse as women’s.
