When two people love each other, it is natural for them to express their feelings to each other. Sex is considered to be the ultimate expression of the love two people have for each other. However, love is not always the reason for sex. Sometimes sex happens without love. Sex without love has various influences on people in their lives. Rape causes long lasting scars on peoples lives, sex is often used as a form of healing, and prostitution is a way of life for some people.
Rape causes long lasting scars on peoples lives. Rape is forcing another person to submit to sexual intercourse. The person committing the rape receives a sense of power over the person he is raping. When Chipper Dove and friends rape Franny they do not do it only for sexual satisfaction. Franny is in love with Chipper Dove and she is willing to have sex with him, but he feels the need to rape her anyway. She was “prepared for him, [she’d] even imagined it – with him. [She] always knew it would be him – the first time – somehow … [She] even told him that they didn’t have to force [her], that [she’d] let him,” (The Hotel New Hampshire, Page 99). She tells herself that “when someone touches you and you don’t want to be touched, that’s not being touched … they don’t really get the you in you,” (The Hotel New Hampshire, Page 101).
However Suzie, who is an expert on rape counselling, says that this is not possible. Chipper Dove continues to have this hold on Franny for a very long time afterwards. She becomes a lesbian while in Vienna. It is not until after they return to New York that Chipper Dove enters their lives again. To get him back, they put on a show and make him think that he is about to get raped by “a bear in heat,”(The Hotel New Hampshire, Page 357). Seeing him scared in this way shows Franny that he does not have the power and control that she thought he had. This allows her to get on with her life. This shows once again the effect rape has. Chipper Dove sees how Franny felt, and this helps her to get over the rape and get on with her life.
Sex can also be used as a form of healing. People can use sex to heal themselves from the pain of a lover leaving them. In The Water Method Man, when Bogus goes away to Vienna without telling Biggie, she feels lonely. She turns to his best friend, Couth for comfort. They end up falling in love. When Bogus returns, and asks her about her relationship with Couth, she tells him not to make her “tell [him] how much [she] loves him … [She] doesn’t feel like hurting [Bogus]. It’s been a long time and [she doesn’t] feel so angry now,” (The Water Method Man, Page 302). She is with Couth because she is trying to get over Bogus, and accept that he is gone. Sex is also used to heal emotional wounds.
In The Hotel New Hampshire, after Susie finds out about Franny’s rape, she takes it upon herself to heal Franny. Frank and John find out about this, “it was Franny’s sound that drew [them] – both keen and soft … it was a sound almost without sex in it, although sex was the song’s subject,” (The Hotel New Hampshire, Page 245). While Franny is going through this healing process, she finds that “it’s easier to love someone of your own sex. There’s not quite so much to commit yourself to, there’s not so much to risk,”(The Hotel New Hampshire, Page 250). Suzie helps Franny heal from the wounds caused by Chipper Dove when he raped her.
Prostitution is a way of life for some. Prostitution is engaging in sexual acts in exchange for money. This is a way of life for some, and their only source of income. In The Water Method Man, Bogus meets a prostitute in Vienna. He asks if she has the time, and she assumes that he is a customer. “In Vienna, prostitution isn’t simply legal; it’s both aided and controlled by law. Every whore is issued a sort of license to practise … if you’re not a registered prostitute, you cant legally be one,” (The Water Method Man, Page 228). Later on, when Bogus has money to pay her, she plays “a game … reflecting little facets of light, caught in the many-faced stones of her rings, all over her body and his,” (The Water Method Man, 267). She makes her living by being a prostitute and makes it enjoyable for her customers.
This is the lifestyle she has chosen, and it changes the way she lives her life. In The Hotel New Hampshire, the prostitutes are a big part of life in the Hotel New Hampshire. They have an entire floor just for them and their customers. “It does not occur to [John] to visit the whores – one or all. Ronda Ray had not really been like them. With Ronda Ray, it was just sex with a fee attached.; in Vienna, sex is a business,” (The Hotel New Hampshire, Page 250). This business is like any other business. Vienna is divided into sections, and prostitutes in different districts are different, and charge accordingly.
The Krugerstrasse whores, although Krugerstrasse was in the first district, were themselves a sort of sub district to the Kartnerstrasse whores (around the corner). If you turned off the Kartnerstrasse onto our tiny street, it was as if you were lowering yourself… you noticed how the whores wore more eye shadow, how their knees buckled, slightly, or their ankles appeared to cave in, or how they appeared to be thicker in the waist (The Hotel New Hampshire, Page 221).
For Screaming Annie, it is a way to get her daughter out of the business before she is old enough, “Screaming Annie’s got the best fake orgasm in the business … She makes more money than any other whore on the Krugerstrasse, because she ‘s working for a respectable retirement for her daughter and for herself,” (The Hotel New Hampshire, page 225).
Sex without love has many different influences on peoples lives. Rape causes many problems in people’s lives, and can take years to get over. When sex is used as a form of healing, it can have a positive effect on some people and a negative effect on others. Prostitution is a way of life for some people, a business like any other. Sex without love is something that goes on in many ways every day, and will continue to do so for a long time to come.
