A security manager is one of the most important jobs of any organization. Although the position of security manager may differ from business to business, the main component of the job is to oversee the security operations for that business. Security managers develop and enforce security policies to ensure a safe environment for both employees and visitors. Security managers have key responsibilities that are vital to the daily operations of that organization. The role of a security manager regarding industrial safety is extremely vital and pertains to maintain and apply knowledge of current policies, regulations, and industrial process. .
Hazards can be a number of things and be described as physical, noise, radiation, light, vibration chemical poisons, dusts etc. A security managers roles is to recognize the hazards in a workplace and taking steps to eliminate or control the hazard ensures the safety and well being of all employees. It is easier and more effective to eliminate or control the hazard before serious injuries result. Hazards can be dealt with by: eliminating the hazard changing the equipment or materials changing work methods using personal protection equipment (PPE) as a last resort. Security managers can identify industrial hazards by hazard identification and risk assessment. There are a number of ways hazards can be identified in the workplace. These include: workplace inspections consultation between employees and employers monitoring injury and illness records, health and environment monitoring, recording complaints, observation.
For example a TSA security manager has many key responsibilities. Managing the screening operation is the main key responsibility. A security manager for TSA needs to make sure all procedures are being followed according to the standard operating procedures. If there is deviation in the screening procedures suck as a bottle containing unknown liquids, sharp objects such as needles and knives get through the security manager must act quickly to rectify the situation. If situations are left unresolved, an incident may occur where it is discovered that procedures were not followed and something disastrous happened to the aircraft. Along with ensuring all procedures are followed, the security manager is responsible for performance evaluations of their employees. Security managers must ensure that each employee knows all required procedures and is proficient in their tasks.
If an employee was unfit for duty, and the manager allowed them to continue working, this could cause a threat to aviation. Another key responsibility of a TSA security manager is to coordinate incident management. The security manager is the point of contact for all operational needs within the terminal. If an incident were to occur, the screening manager acts a liaison of the Federal Security Director, and makes informed decisions based on the situation. If an incident were to occur and there were multiple people making decisions, the information may not be conveyed quickly or accurately, and that could cause further disruptions or result in more dangerous scenarios.
It is evident that every security manager has a lot of responsibilities and is a vital asset to any organization. Security is the main priority of those that are selected into the position of security manager. Whether it be performing performance evaluations on security officers or ensuring that no outside threats sneak in, safety and security are the main objectives. Industrial hazards can be threatening the health and safety of organization and its employees, because of that it is very important that security managers to fully recognize occupational health and safety management for organization increasing its productivity and enhancing its competitiveness.
