Same Sex Marriage Should Not Be Legalized Essay

Same sex marriage, also known as equal marriage or gay marriage, is marriage between two persons of the same biological sex or gender identity. The question of legalization of same sex marriage is an issue in many of our states today and in other countries. At least “17 U.S. states are now permitting gay marriage and some are still pending” (Bloomberg). Many people have their own beliefs and reasonings when it comes to same-sex marriage; however, God made a man and a woman to join hands together and say vows in the right way. God made Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve; as a result, a man is for woman and a woman is for man. Take a look what God did to Sodom and Gomorrah in 1900 BCE.

History

According to Holly Joan Toensing, the book of Genesis in the Bible translates to, ”Homosexuality = Death” (Toensing 61). Sometimes the executional judgments came as a result of the wicked conduct of people in their daily lives. Sodom and Gomorrah are an example of this. God inspected the cities and determined that the sin of the inhabitants was very heavy; he decided to bring the cities to ruin. “Then Jehovah made it rain sulfur and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah—it came from Jehovah, from the heavens. So he overthrew these cities, yes, the entire district, including all the inhabitants of the cities and the plants of the ground.” (Genesis 19:24, 25) But, why? The apostle Peter mentions indulgence in “loose conduct.” (2 Peter 2:7) As indicated by the use of the Greek term from which that expression is translated, the people of Sodom and Gomorrah indulged in wrongdoing in a manner that displayed brazen disrespect, even contempt, for law and authority.

In addition, Jude 7 says that they ‘committed fornication excessively and went out after flesh for unnatural use,’ and “gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion.” Weston Fields states that “God’s destruction was brought about by the actions of “the sex-crazed homosexually inclined male population of Sodom” (Qtd in Toensing 61). The grossness of their conduct was manifest when the men of Sodom, “from boy to old man, all the people in one mob,” surrounded the house of Lot and demanded that he turn over his guests for the men of Sodom to gratify their perverted appetites. And they shouted denunciations at Lot because he resisted their depraved demands.—Genesis 19:4, 5, 9. This situation shows that the two cities deserve for their destruction; imagine that boys and old men, surrounded Lot’s house, attempting to rape his angelic guests.

Robert Alter reveals that, ”A society that rejects the moral bonds of civilization for the instant gratification of dark urges can be swept away in a moment; . . . the very danger of illicit sexuality may blight a kingdom with sterility” (Qtd. in Toensing 61-62). Their destruction serves as a permanent warning. Since this account and other similar ones have been written for our instruction, for a warning to us, the moral lessons coming from them are still valid.

Statistics

Same-sex marriage is legal in 17 U.S states and the District of Columbia: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. Worldwide, 16 other countries (and parts of Mexico) also have laws allowing same-sex marriage and domestic partnerships. Most of these are in Europe and South America. But “41% of the total percentage of Americans strongly favor gay marriage, 47% of Americans oppose or strongly oppose gay marriage, and 10% of Americans are unsure about gay marriage” (Statistic Brain). Many oppose same sex marriage because it is unnatural; they are using the wrong body parts for the wrong reasons.

It is also unnatural as they will not be able to have their own children; their children will either be adopted or are carried by surrogate mothers and will never really be completely natural, not like straight parents. Some cons also say that gay marriage could potentially lead down a “slippery slope” giving people in polygamous, incestuous, bestial, and other nontraditional relationships the right to marry. While pros say that gay marriage would make it easier for same-sex couples to adopt, providing stable homes for children who would otherwise be left in foster care. And same-sex marriage is a civil right. Some are neutral when it comes to same sex marriage issue because we have free will and we must live our life how we want. Now let’s see the effects of same sex marriage.

Effects of Same Sex Marriage

The first argument against same sex marriages is quite obvious: the human population will diminish gradually in size. Same sex marriages means that offspring cannot be produced naturally. The married couple would have to opt for artificial insemination or to adopt a child if they plan on building a family; however, it is in the child’s best interests that he be raised under the influence of his natural father and mother. As argued by Ryan T. Anderson, William E. Simon Fellow in Religion and a Free Society at The Heritage Foundation, “In recent decades, marriage has been weakened by a revisionist view that is more about adults’ desires than children’s needs… Redefining marriage to include same-sex relationships is the culmination of this revisionism, and it would leave emotional intensity as the only thing that sets marriage apart from other bonds.” (Heritage.org) A child of a same-sex marriage will always be deprived of either his natural mother or father Same-sex marriage ignores a child’s best interests. Furthermore, same sex marriage is a violation to religious beliefs and old traditional values that support procreation.

Religions like Christianity promote the creation of offspring freely, but same sex marriages cannot do that. Legal recognition of same-sex “marriage” would necessarily obscure certain basic moral values, devalue traditional marriage, and weaken public morality. It can also bring huge financial and emotional stress to others, because homosexuals can sue people who are exercising their religious beliefs. Don’t assume that people’s spiritual beliefs are irrelevant. People consider spiritual issues to be extremely important, and the stress imposed on religious people by forcing them to “accept” and/or support homosexual practice and/or intimidate them into silence harms a person’s spiritual and emotional health. People with religious moral convictions will be considered worse than racists.

Another effect is the health risks are enormous to themselves and others; whether or not you want to say that HIV/AIDS is a homosexual disease, the fact is that it is highly prevalent among the gay and lesbian community due to their great number of sex partners. The research article of BioMed Central Psychiatry states that, “Conversely, several mental health problems have been identified as risk factors for contracting HIV [16,17]. For example, depressive symptoms and the use of alcohol or drugs, such as amphetamine, cannabis and cocaine, are associated with increased sexually risky behaviour and an increased risk of contracting HIV, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM) [18-20].” (Schade, Annemeik, Gerad van Grootheest, and Smit, Johannes 13.2)

The collateral damage to the rest of society, as far as health risks, cannot be denied. The more the contact or intercourse of a HIV positive person, the more people will infected by HIV. Given the serious health consequences of homosexual behavior, we would be unloving as a society to endorse it. We would not be merely allowing people to destroy themselves, but we would be encouraging them to do so

The Sanctity of Marriage

Same sex marriage would make the word “marriage” meaningless. Calling something marriage does not make it marriage. Marriage has always been a covenant between a man and a woman, which is by its nature, ordered toward the procreation and education of children and the unity and wellbeing of the spouses. John Finnis described that, “Marrying is an act, the chosen act of the two spouses who thereby commit themselves to living as husband and wife” (Finnis, John 388). Marriage is the union of a man and a woman as husband and wife according to the standard set out by God. Marriage is a divine institution, authorized and established by God in the Garden of Eden. Marriage brings into being the family unit, and the family circle. Its basic purpose was the reproducing of the members of the human family, to bring into existence more creatures of the human kind. God made male and female and ordained marriage as the proper arrangement for the multiplication of the human race.

This is the most important reason, whenever one violates the natural moral order established by God, one sins and offends God. Same-sex “marriage” does just this. Accordingly, anyone who professes to love God must be opposed to it. Marriage is not the creature of any State. Rather, it was established by God in Paradise for our first parents, Adam and Eve. First Corinthians 6:9, 10 says that, “Or do you not know that unrighteous people will not inherit God’s Kingdom? Do not be misled. Those who are sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, men who submit to homosexual acts, men who practice homosexuality, thieves, greedy people, drunkards, revilers, and extortioners will not inherit God’s Kingdom.” Therefore, if we want to inherit God’s Kingdom, we should keep away from doing immoral things like 1 Corinthians says.

Promote Natural Marriage

Natural marriage is beneficial while same-sex marriage would be catastrophic. Consider this: What would be the effect on society if everyone lived faithfully in natural marriage? It would result in a dramatic reduction in crime, welfare, abortion, and child abuse. On the other hand, what would be the effects on society if everyone lived faithfully in same-sex marriage? It would be the end of society and the human race itself. While universal homosexuality, of course, would not occur, the two questions should help us realize that the two types of relationships can never be equated because they are not equally beneficial. Marriage is hard enough as it is in our over-sexualized culture.

The media advertises instant gratification and mocks the ideals of natural marriage, making it more difficult for couples to commit to one another or to stay together once they do. The last thing we need is for the law to encourage the same kind of destructive behavior as well. Don S. Browning said that “The natural law needs the support of other norms, narratives, and institutions to be fully effective in human governing human lives.” (Browning, Don 742) Yes, we need deeper models and exemplars of love and faithfulness, trust and sacrifice, commitment and community to give its norms more content and coherence.

The benefits of natural marriage cannot be overstated. It benefits the married couple, their children, our economy, and the nation as a whole. In fact, natural marriage serves as a kind of national immune system. When our marriages are strong, our nation is strong and our social problems are few. When our marriages are weak, so is our nation. And if the court or congress mandates same-sex marriage, it will be in effect saying that sodomy is now good enough to promote-from prohibit to permit and to promote. And always remember that God made Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve; as a result, a man is for woman and a woman is for man.
