My Last Duchess Cel

The text I have selected to discuss is ‘My Last Duchess’ by Robert Browning, which was written in 1842. “My Last Duchess” is a dramatic monologue of one side of a conversation between a Duke and a Count’s messenger who are negotiating a marriage to the Count’s daughter. The Duke’s speech about his ‘Last Duchess’ reveals perhaps more than he first intended to. The Duke shows the Count’s envoy a painting of his ‘Last Duchess,’ he talks fondly of the painting and goes on to describe the Duchess. He describes her as beautiful, easily pleased and flirtatious. The setting of this poem is the 16th century, where women were considered mere possessions, objects, child bearers, –not people– and taught to…

My Last Duchess by Robert Browning

In poem My Last Duchess, Robert Browning wants his readers to understand the conflict of art and morality. In the poem, the narrator talks about his dead wife, using eloquent words as though his word itself is a painting, but beneath his beautiful words, he tells a story of why and how he killed his wife, “I gave commands; Then all smiles stopped together” (Browning 2). He killed his wife because, she doesn’t appreciate him as much as he would like her to appreciate him, “as if she ranked/ My gift of a nine-hundred-years-old name/ With anybody’s gift” (Browning 2). The significance of Browning’s title to the theme of the poem is the engagement of art and morality of the…

The relationship between men and women in Browning’s poems

Browning presents the relationship between men and women in the two poems in a number of ways. Such as mans power over women, women as possessions/belongings/treated like children, women in their traditional role, the death of the women, men as inhuman/ uncaring and how the male character feels about the death of his wife/lover. All of these points are shown and used by Robert Browning in the two poems, Porphirias Lover and My Last Duchess. In the poem Porphirias Lover presents the relationship between men and women as showing the men being in control. From lines thirty one to thirty three Browning wrote Be sure I looked up at her eyes happy and proud; at least I knew Porphyria worshipped…

“My Last Duchess” By Robert Browning

Robert Browning is known as the Master of Psychological dramatic monologue. In “My last Duchess” the reader only hears the Duke’s story whose perverse point of view throws false accusations towards his recently deceased wife. What the reader knows about the characters is limited, so he must piece together the story on his own. The story the duke thinks he tells, of an unfaithful wife who offended his dignity, and the story he really tells, of jealousy and possessive love that leads to murder, engages the reader on a psychological level. Many of Browning’s main characters are of twisted psyche and in this poem the egomaniacal duke’s perception of conflict is severely distorted (Long 4). Michael G. Miller’s essay “Browning’s…
