Valiant Rikki-tikki-tavi has a lot on his plate. In the story “Rikki-tikki-tavi” by Rudyard Kipling, a skillful mongoose, named Rikki, has to protect an entire family from the snakes! With the snakes everywhere, no one is safe. They want the garden to themselves. They only reason Rikki is alive, is because he shows trustworthiness, caring, and responsibility. Rikki shows great characteristics.
The main reason Rikki is able to protect the family is that he is trustworthy. When Rikki lies on the little boy’s pillow, whose name is Teddy, Teddy’s mother says “I don’t like that. He might bite Teddy.” Teddy’s father argues “He’ll do no such thing. He is safer than a bloodhound.” This example represents how the parents are able to trust Rikki. Because of this, Rikki can protect not only the garden, but also the inside of the house. If he was not trustworthy, the family would not trust him enough to let him in the house, and eventually, the snakes would kill the family.
Another reason he is successful in protection is because he is caring. “Do you think it is right to eat a fledgling out of a nest?” is what Rikki says to Nag, the snake. This example shows that Rikki cares about the birds. Because he cares, he will try his best to protect the garden and the family. If he was not caring, he would not want to kill the snakes. This would lead to him and the family being killed.
The last reason Rikki can easily protect the family is because he is responsible. “Rikki tingled with rage and hatred at this.” That example from the story shows how Rikki felt after he heard the snakes’ plans to take over and kill the family. This shows that he is responsible for fulfilling his duties as a mongoose by trying to kill the snakes. He needs to kill the snakes so the family and the garden are safe. Because he is responsible, he will try to kill the snakes.
Rikki-tikki-tavi might be small, but he has an enormous amount of great characteristics. He shows trustworthiness because you can trust him to keep the garden safe. Rikki is caring and responsible, so he will try to keep the garden and the family safe. These characteristics are important, because if he did no show those, the snakes would eventually take over. If Rikki was gone, the family would be gone.
