The Shawshank Redemption is a movie since 1996 and is still on top of the list of world’s greatest movies according to the Internet Movie Database (IMDB). I don’t wonder, it is a great film that actually has a surprising end, unlike most films. It really grabs on to your soul and makes you think you are a part of the whole thing.
Hope is a strong theme in the movie and is well recognized throughout the movie. Of course there is Andy who brings hope to the whole place when everybody have lost theirs, and when he gets out in the end it is obvious that it was his hope that motivated him (and the wardens unfairness of course). Andy is the main sign of any hope in the movie. It is him that builds a new library in the prison so the inmates can read. Andy even schooled some of the boys, which of course gave them hope. Especially Tommy who always thought of himself as a stupid man and an even more stupid criminal, but he passed the test unlike he thought he would.
Andy Dufresne is the main character in the movie a side with Morgan Freeman who plays Red. It’s amazing how cool the character stays the whole time. He knows he is innocent and he believes in justice, although he gets framed for a crime he didn’t commit he is absolutely certain he is getting out of there, legally or illegally. He quickly adjusts to the circumstances and tries to make the best out of everything. He knows who to get friends with and how to reach out for them. He’s like the perfect poker-player, no one expected anything because he had the perfect plan.
He tells the guys after his 2 month isolation that even though the guards can break them down, there is one thing they will never reach, and that is the hope within. He never gives up on hope, even though Red tells him to be more realistic. Maybe it was hope that got him out of there in the end, or his extreme determination but he got out and that gave the other ones hope. He never did anything wrong, he always did what was best for others. In the end when he says that jail made him a criminal, he just meant that he finally got how the whole thing worked. He found out that the whole system was corrupt and he finally got his opportunity to get the guards back after what they did to Tommy.
