Strengths and weaknesses are important to us as individuals in order to make a difference in correlation to personal growth. Our individuality is further intensified by each of us having different goals, priorities and other special qualities. In writing this paper I plan to clearly define and identify each of my strengths and weaknesses. I believe this class is definitely giving me a greater understanding of the different techniques and methods that will allow me to improve my learning process. I also believe realizing my strengths and weaknesses will help me to become a more well-rounded and self-conscious individual.
My personal strengths are my communication, discipline, punctuality, and my ability to stay focused among the many distractions. The first quality that enhances my personality is communication. During unpredicted situations I have been able to provide strength and confidence to my peers and team members. I attempt to remain calm, so I can provide direction. A team needs a person he or she can look up to for guidance and support for work or school issues. Throughout this program at the University of Phoenix, I will be working with teams which will further strengthen this valuable asset.
Secondly, discipline is something we all develop throughout our lifetime; discipline equips us with the tools necessary to succeed in life. Discipline has given me the ability to have a solid self-esteem, a sense of humor and ability to stay focused on goals which have resulted in a greater desire to learn. Having discipline is the ability to gain control by obedience. Punctuality is very important to me. I make every effort never to be late and the majority of the time I arrive early for my appointments and engagements. In my opinion punctuality gives employers as well as others the idea that an individual is eager and ready to engage in work or the task at hand.
Lastly, staying focused has not been easy and at times staying focused has been quite challenging not to go off in many different directions. At times I find myself detouring away from my goals but, learning to stay focused has kept me on the roadmap to both reaching and achieving my goals, on the, other hand we must also be able to recognize out weaknesses in order to be well balanced individuals. Weaknesses that I possess are writing, time management, assertiveness and organization. A negative factor in a person’s character should not be weakness. Each of us has numerous flaws that can be improved at some point in our lives.
Throughout my educational years one weak point that I have had is a fear of writing. A blank page to me is very frustrating. I doubt my ability to write a first-rate paper. As a result of the slang usage in everyday conversations of society the English language is very confusing. This makes it more difficult to differentiate or correct English grammar then slang, and transform that into a paper. I have assured myself that despite my self-doubt that I can overcome my fear by working harder on my writing skills. By improving my writing ability, I will gain a greater sense of the assurance that my writing is satisfactory. By going through this course and many others like this, my ability to write an outstanding paper is increased.
There are instances where time management has taken away from the quality of my performance on individual and team projects. Completion of a project a few days prior to the deadline would allow me to have another pair of eyes to look over the project and help me proofread or correct anything that I may have missed. Time management is some thing that I will continue working on in order to be a more efficient employee. I must have determination and commitment and the desire to change. Starting my project and assignments as soon as I am aware to them in the fast-paced courses at the University of Phoenix will help me finish the assignments on a reasonable schedule.
Working with my last employer as a Human Services Case manager has tested my assertiveness and made me realize this weakness. Working with a diverse group people and different personalities challenged my psyche to a point where assertiveness had to be learned. Recognizing assertiveness as weakness I have found assertiveness can make me a better leader while accomplishing my organizational goals.
Organization is a weakness that I have recently noticed since taking this course. I was not aware this weakness as something I needed to be concerned with. Taking this class has made me self-conscious of this weakness. Recognizing this weakness I know I will need to reconfigure my psyche. Doing so I know will only enhance myself. I hope organization will not become this constant battle for me because; I will have to overcome it in order to more productive employee.
I have the ability professionally to track different projects at different times. The ability to simultaneously track different projects has been very resourceful when trying to work on a deadline. This has been described by many employers as “multi-tasking”. Change is potentially possible for the workplace or school environment. The different assignments that we work on weekly have given me the ability to adapt my skills in a variety of different work situations.
In conclusion by acknowledging one’s strengths and weaknesses an individual can both take advantage of and improve his or her quality of life. By completing this paper, which has my weaknesses laid out, I will be able to develop a habit for change and self improvement. Through careful management and monitoring of your strengths and weaknesses the door will be open for personal growth by evolving these problems and eliminating problems while I attend the University of Phoenix. I know that using my strengths, new ways can be found to overcome obstacles in both my workplace and in school. As your leadership skills improve an individual can become a more, self-conscious and well rounded individual making for a highly sought after employee.
